What is Burn?
• A burn is nothing but damage to the body’s tissues caused by heating/burning substances.
• These substances can be like chemicals, electricity, sunlight and radiation.
• The most common causes for burns include scalds from hot liquids and steams or any kind of fires and flammable liquids or gases.

Burns are divided into three categories:-
• The first-degree burns that damages only the outer layer of skin.
• The second-degree burns that damages the outer layer and the layer underneath.
• The third-degree burns that damage or destroy the innermost layer of skin and tissues present deeply into the skin.

Burn can cause:-
• Swelling
• Blistering
• Scarring of the skin
• Shock and death
• Infections

Causes of Burns
• Direct fire burn
• Inflammable liquid or gas burn
• Electricity burn
• Chemical burns
• Sunburns
• Therapeutic burns (as in operation, laser etc)
• Burns due to contact of skin to extreme hot materials like frying pan, oven’s grill etc

Home Remedies for Burns

• Immediately wash with water.
• Apply honey on the burn area as honey has healing property.
• Put two tbsp of yogurt on the burn and wait for about fifteen minutes.
• This is one of the effective burns cure.
• If you have burn in the tip of the finger, then according to an acupuncture therapist, you should hold your ear lobe and one will feel no pain.
• Keeping egg whites on the affected area is another effective remedy.
• Cut an onion and apply soon on the burning area to relieve pain.
• Soaking the burn in whole milk for 15 minutes is also helpful.
• Applying Aloe Vera paste or gel on the burn every few hours will help relieve the burning sensation.
• One can also mix Aloe Vera with lavender oil.
• Apply some dish washing detergent on the spot onto the burnt area will give relief immediately.
• One should dab on pure essential lavender oil on the burnt area to dissipate the pain in about ten minutes.
• Apply two to three times a day.
• This will relieve the pain and also helps in not leaving a scar due to the burn.
• Having ripe papaya also makes it good natural remedy for burns.
• Papaya contains enzymes that aid in removing dead cells from the injured area.
• It rejuvenates the skins by bringing new cells.
• Diet plays a very important role in the healing process.
• Consume a high protein and calorie diet for a speedy recovery.
• Skin burn causes a loss of substantial percentage of micronutrients, such as copper, selenium, and zinc.
• This slows the healing process.
• It also increases the risk of infection.

Other Home Remedies
1. Cotton ash paste
• Make a cotton ash paste by burning a piece of white cotton fabric and mixing its ash with olive oil any other cooking oil.
• Apply this thick paste on the burnt skin.
• Do not use cotton directly on burns as it tends to adhere to the wound.

2. Yogurt, barley and turmeric paste
• Mix yogurt, barley and turmeric and make a paste out of them.
• Apply it for burns treatment.

3. Marigold
• Use Marigold (Calendula officinalis) to give first aid for burns injury.
• Apply Calendula infused oil or Calendula ointment for home burn treatment.
• Marigold compress can also be used for soothing burn injury.
