What is meant by Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

• Digestive disorders are among the most common and widespread of all ailments.
• These conditions include frequent problems of heartburn and acidity or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
• Irritable bowel syndrome is one such condition with same symptoms as the above disease condition.
• Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic disorder that affects the gastrointestinal tract.
• Irritable bowel syndrome affects the colon.

The large intestine causes symptoms that include:
• severe cramping
• abdominal pain
• bloating
• gas
• constipation
• diarrhea
• alternate bouts of Diarrhea and Constipation
• nausea
• headache
• fatigue
• depression or anxiety
• mucus-covered stools
• urge to have another bowel movement one after another

Diarrhea and constipation are part and parcel of Irritable bowel syndrome.

Home Remedies for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

18. Diarrhea treatment using Pomegranate
• The pomegranate has proved beneficial in the treatment of diarrhea.
• Pomegranate is known for its astringent properties.
• If the patient develops weakness due to profuse and continuous purging, one should repeatedly take about 50 ml of pomegranate juice to drink.
• This will control the diarrhea.

19. Diarrhea treatment using Mango Seeds
• Mango seeds are valuable in treating diarrhea.
• The seeds should be collected during the mango season which is dried in the shade and powdered.
• Keep them stored for use as a medicine when required.
• A dose of about one and a half to two grams with or without honey should be administered.
• Take this twice daily.

20. Diarrhea treatment using Sesame Seeds
• Sesame seeds are helpful in the treatment of this condition.
• Two tablespoons of the seeds should be lightly roasted in a frying pan.
• They should then be ground into a fine powder.
• Mix this with one tablespoon of cow’s clarified butter.
• The mass should be divided into three parts.
• Each part should be taken with half a cup of boiled goat’s milk.
• Take it thrice daily for six days.
• It acts as an excellent medicine in this condition.

21. Diarrhea treatment using Rice
• Rice is useful in treating diarrhea in children.
• A teaspoon of powder of charred parboiled rice, mixed with a glass of buttermilk, should be given.
• It should be given in doses of thirty grams every half an hour.
• This will bring excellent results.

22. Diarrhea treatment using Other Remedies
• Cooked or baked apples are good for diarrhea as the cooking process softens the cellulose.
• A glass of fresh tomato juice, mixed with a pinch of salt and pepper when taken in the morning is also effective.
• Application of cold compress and a cold hip bath.
• Other starchy liquids such as arrowroot water, barley water, and coconut water are also useful in treating diarrhea. These liquids not only replace the fluid lost but also bind the stools.
• Other home remedies include bananas and garlic. Bananas contain pectin and encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria. Garlic is a powerful, effective, and harmless germ killer which aids in digestion and removes intestinal worms.

Constipation diet

1. Natural and Simple Diet Consisting of Unrefined Foods
• Include plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and wholegrain cereals in your diet.
• It is not necessary to go on a restrictive diet but intake of low fiber and high fat foods like red meats, cheese, and other processed or refined foods should be restricted.
• Keep yourself well hydrated with a good intake of water and fresh fruit juices
• Cut unhealthy artificial drinks, juices or alcoholic and caffeinated beverages.
• The most important factor in curing constipation is a natural and simple diet.

2. This should consist of unrefined foods such as:
• wholegrain cereals
• bran
• honey
• lentils
• green and leafy vegetables
• fresh and dry fruits
• milk products in the form of butter, clarified butter, and cream.

3. Sugar and sugary foods should be strictly avoided.
4. Foods which constipate are:
• all products made of white flour,
• rice,
• bread,
• pulses,

• hard-boiled eggs.
