• Tonsillitis refers to acute inflammation of the tonsils.
• These tonsils lay, one on each side of the throat.
• Chronic tonsillitis is enlargement of the tonsils accompanied by repeated attacks of infection.
• The tonsils are an important part of the immune system that serves as our body’s natural defense system against infections.
• Tonsillitis is basically an infection of the tonsils.
• The main function of the tonsils is to filter out bacteria and any other microorganisms that can cause infections.
• At times however the tonsils themselves can suffer an infection.
• Viral infection is the cause for tonsillitis.
• Tonsillitis could refer to an inflammation of the tonsils and any other lymph nodes towards the back of the throat like the adenoids.

Tonsillitis symptoms

• Sore throat
• Fever
• Headache
• Pain in various parts of the body
• Difficulty in swallowing
• General weakness
• The tonsils are seen to be inflamed and red
• In some cases, spots of pus exude from them

Home Remedies for Tonsillitis

23.Tonsillitis treatment using Spinach
• Mix fifty grams of fresh leaves of spinach, and 250 ml of water with a pinch of ammonium chloride and one teaspoonful of honey.
• This infusion is an effective expectorant in the treatment of Tonsillitis.

24. Tonsillitis treatment using Sesame Seeds
• An infusion of one teaspoon of sesame seeds that is mixed with a teaspoon of linseed, a pinch of common salt, and a teaspoon of honey can be prepared.
• This infusion can be given once at night for beneficial results.
• Take half a teaspoon of dry seeds pounded into powder and this should be mixed with two tablespoons of water and taken twice daily.
• A decoction of half a teaspoon of the same should be taken twice daily.

25. Tonsillitis treatment using Almond
• An emulsion of almonds is useful in bronchial diseases, including Tonsillitis.
• It is prepared by making a powder of seven kernels of almonds and mixing the powdered kernels in a cup of orange or lemon juice.
• This emulsion should be taken once daily at night.

26. Tonsillitis treatment using Humidifiers
• Use some humidifiers in your room for a few hours every day.
• This will help soothe the irritation and inflammation of the air passageways.
• Both warm and cool mist humidifiers can be used to help to get rid of the mucus in the airways.

Tonsillitis Diet

1. Orange Juice and Water
• In acute Tonsillitis, the patient should fast on orange juice and water.
• This should be done till the acute symptoms subside.
• Later, the person should adopt an all-fruit diet for two or three days.

2. All-fruit Diet and then Well-balanced Diet
• In the case of chronic Tonsillitis, the patient can begin with an all-fruit diet for five to seven days.
• Take three meals a day of fresh juicy fruits.
• After the all-fruit diet, follow a well-balanced diet with emphasis on seeds, nuts, grains, raw vegetables, and fresh fruits.
• For drinks, unsweetened lemon water, or cold/hot plain water may be taken.

Other Tonsillitis Treatments

1. Hot Towels Application over Upper Chest followed by Cold Towel
• Hot towels wrung out and applied over the upper chest are helpful in both chronic and acute Tonsillitis.
• After applying three hot towels in turn for two or three minutes each, finish off with a cold towel.
• A cold pack can be applied to the upper chest several times daily in acute conditions.
• The procedure is to wring out some linen material in cold water and then wrap it two or three times round the affected part.
• Cover it with flannel.
• The pack can remain for about an hour at a time.

2. Fresh Air and Outdoor Exercises
• Fresh air and outdoor exercise are also essential for the treatment of Tonsillitis.
• The patient is advised to take a morning walk every day.

• This tea strengthens the upper and lower respiratory systems.
• It clears out the mucous and relieves cough and breathing problems.
