What is Vitamin A?

– kale
– cantaloupes
• Beta carotene is probably the most prevalent and effective provitamin A carotenoids.

– zinc

• In addition, it appears that a mixture of vitamin A and lutein may improve vision in people affected by retinitis pigmentosa (RP).
• A recent 4-year research carried out by the scientists from Harvard Medical School and some prominent universities revealed that men and women who have retinitis pigmentosa and also took regular supplements of vitamin A and lutein have a slower paced loss in peripheral vision when compared to people who do not take the combined supplements.
• Because beta carotene is converted into vitamin A within the body, it’s likely beta carotene (provitamin A) which offers eye benefits since the pre-formed retinol type is of A vitamin. However, more studies are necessary to confirm this.
• In the beginning of 2011, researchers at Columbia University Hospital (New York) found that a synthetic, altered type of vitamin A could possibly slow the progression of Stargardt’s disease.
• This is an inherited eye disease that causes severe vision loss in teenagers.
