Anaemia – Types, Causes, Symptoms and Diet

• Anaemia is a disorder that results from decrease in the concentration of red blood cells or hemoglobin.
• One of the main functions of hemoglobin is to carry oxygen to tissues.
• Anaemia results in decreased oxygen carrying capacity of blood.

Types of anaemia

• There are numerous types of anaemia.
• Their causes vary as well as their treatments.
• Iron-deficiency anaemia is the most prevalent one.
• It is treated with changes in diet and by taking iron supplements.
• Other forms are anaemia during pregnancy.
• This type is considered quite normal.
• Certain types can lead to long term anemic problems and resulting in other problems due to this deficiency.

Common Causes of anaemia

• Bleeding (hemorrhage)

Diet plans for anaemia

• Dry cereal: Many cereals are fortified with a nutrient punch of iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid.
• Green leafy vegetables contain loads of iron and folic acid.
In 1/2 a cup Spinach is present:
– 3.2 mg of iron
– 130 mcg of folic acid
• Cut way down on your intake of meats, milk, and eggs as this causes anaemia caused by nutritional deficiency.
• These products cause iron from plant sources not to absorb by the body.
• Always check if adequate amounts of iron and vitamin B12 are included in your diet.
• Eat foods rich in vitamin C.
• Eat whole grains, spinach, and legumes. This will increase absorption of the iron in these foods.
• Consume coffee or tea between meals and not with meals.
• Caffeine reduces iron absorption.
• Eat a lot of green leafy vegetables.
• Honey helps increase the hemoglobin in the blood and it is rich in iron, copper and manganese.
