Colon and rectum are two of the main organs which make up the digestive system, mainly the large intestine. Any problems persisting in any of these organs may result in the malfunctioning of the digestive system.

Colorectal cancer is one such disease which highly affects the rectum and the colon. When the cells in the inner lining of the rectum and the colon start multiplying even when there is no need for multiplication, it gives rise to colorectal cancer.

This is caused mainly due to the abnormal growth of the cells in the rectum and the colon. Colorectal cancer can be very dangerous if not treated at the correct time and in the correct manner. It is the third most common death causing cancer in the world.

There are various risk factors which may lead to colorectal cancer in a person. These risk factors include family history of colorectal cancer i.e. hereditary problem, age factor, smoking and many more. Another very common risk factor of the colorectal cancer is the intake of alcohol. You must be wondering how alcohol can affect the rectum and the colon. This article will tell you the reason why alcohol can prove to be dangerous to you colon and the rectum.

Alcohol has both positive as well as negative effect on the cells of the rectum and colon. As a positive effect, alcohol can lead to the death of the cancerous cells which are growing inside the organs but as a negative effect it may stimulate the proliferation of the cancerous cells. Studies have clearly shown that the risk of colorectal cancer in a person increases with the increase in his alcohol drinking habit. More the intake of alcohol more will be the person at the risk of colorectal cancer.

Studies have been made regularly regarding this aspect and they have shown that the people consuming around or more than 30 grams of alcohol per day are at an increased risk of colorectal cancer than those who do not drink at all.

The people who have an intake of more than 45 grams of alcohol per day are at the maximum risk of colorectal cancer. Also it has been proved that about 3.6 % of colorectal cancer cases are due to alcohol intake and the 3.5 % of the deaths due to colorectal cancer have drinkers involved.

In a research done for about 14 years and 7 months it was shown that out of 400 cases of colorectal cancer about half of the people were at the regular intake of alcohol.People who had 41 drinks per week had 95 % chances of suffering from colorectal cancer.

Alcohol is considered to be dangerous because it stimulates the growth of adenoma and as a result promotes colorectal carcinogenesis. It has been shown by various studies and researches that out of all the drinks containing alcohol, beer is the drink which is closely associated with the risk of colorectal cancer whereas wine has the weakest association.

Alcohol tends to alter the metabolism process of the liver compounds like the genotoxic compounds (eg: nitrosamines). This is because the microsomal monooxygenase i.e. the metabolism system of the liver is suppressed by the intake of alcohol and this as a result leads to the growth of colorectal cancer.

The risk of colorectal cancer due to alcohol intake depends on various factors like the amount of alcohol intake per day, the type of alcohol intake etc. On one hand when studies show that beer can increase the risk of colorectal cancer in a person it has also been proved on the other hand that the moderate intake of wine can reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.

In conclusion, it can be said that alcohol is moderately related with the risk of colorectal cancer.

Apparently yes to a certain degree! There is no conclusive medical evidence, but there is a logically close relationship between alcohol and pancreatic cancer. In fact, consumption of high amounts of alcohol increases the risk levels for various cancers, whether it is a breast cancer or any other cancer disease. As per figures, Alcohol consumption is answerable for 3.6% cancer patients and 3.5% cancer deaths worldwide. Not only the cancer of pancreas, but, also the risk of cancers of oesophagus, pharynx, mouth, breast, liver, stomach, ovaries and larynx increases with regular intake of alcohol. A study conducted in year 2009 revealed that 2,100 Australians pass away due to alcohol related cancer every year. Similarly, another study in 2011 shows one in 10 of all cancers in male patients and one in 33 women patients were rooted by past or present alcohol intake.
“Heavy drinking causes death in about 7 out of 10 cases of chronic pancreatitis. Chronic pancreatitis is also behind the pancreatic cancer as another risk factor. But it is not as harmful as other factors, so if we talk about the link between alcohol and pancreatic cancer, then, it is very low to compare.” While the connection between the alcohol intake and the pancreatitis is well known and clear but the relationship between alcohol and pancreatic cancer is still under observation. It cannot be considered as a ‘Major Factor’. As a matter of fact, there is no risk for people consuming up to 30grams of alcohol a day. Along with the excessive alcohol intake, it is the fat and smoking habits that add fuel to fire.
Pancreatic Cancer is the most common reason behind cancer deaths as per US based survey. It is true that alcohol cannot be taken as a major reason for pancreatic Cancer but ‘Excessive Alcohol Intake’ (which implies that two drinks a day) can surely enhance the chances for a person to have pancreatic cancer in the future. To make it more factual, according to Researcher Jeanine M. Genkinger, an assistant professor of oncology at Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. , states “We saw a 22% higher risk of pancreatic cancer in those who drank two or more alcoholic beverages a day compared to non-drinkers.”
Genkinger and her co-researchers have termed this risk factor as “modest”. Pancreatic Cancer became deadly in the early days of its research when it was difficult to diagnose and nearly 38,000 people were found suffering from it in 2008, as per the details given by American Cancer Society. In 2008, the computed numbers of U.S. cancer deaths were 6% in both men and women. The evidence about the link between alcohol and pancreatic cancer is still conflicting, with more studies of alcohol intake ongoing. As per the logical findings, heavy consumption of alcohol is connected to chronic inflammation of pancreas which we call pancreatitis and type 2 diabetes, and both increases fear of pancreatic cancer in the body. So, possibly, heavy consumption of alcohol becomes a risk factor too.
As per more studies conducted by Genkinger and her team, that included a survey on 863,000 men and women, along with their dietary habits; In their study, 2,187 men and women were analysed suffering from pancreatic cancer. First of all, Genkinger found out that 22% increase in risk for two or more drinks a day, the women who drank two or more a day had a 41% increased threat compared to non-drinkers. On which Genkinger gave her remarks as “that was statistically significant.” Whereas the men had 12% increased threat factor as per a comparison to non-drinkers. Similarly, when men switched to three glasses, the threat rose to 60%. To sum up as per their study, Alcoholics had only 40% excess risk for pancreatic cancer.

What is High Blood Pressure?
Arteries carry blood from heart to rest of the body. While carrying blood they put pressure on artery walls. This pressure is called blood pressure and high blood pressure occurs when your blood moves through your arteries at a higher pressure than normal.
The upper or first number in a blood pressure reading is the systolic pressure which is the peak blood pressure when your heart is squeezing blood out and the lower or second number is called the diastolic pressure which is the pressure when your heart is filling with blood relaxing between beats. A normal blood pressure is less than 120/80. Symptoms may include dizziness or dizzy spells, headache or nosebleeds.

Causes of High Blood Pressure
- Weight
- Activity level
- Use of tobacco
- Excessive sodium intake
- Stress
- Low potassium intake
- Age and alcohol consumption
- Diabetes
- Some causes are kidney disease, hormonal disorders, thyroid disease, adrenal gland disease, and the use of certain drugs.
The complications that are caused by high blood pressure are narrowing of the arteries, stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure or eye damage.

Things that can be done to reduce high blood pressure
- Reducing your salt intake, eating more fruit and vegetables and keeping to alcohol limits will lower your blood pressure.
- Being more active and taking regular exercise lowers blood pressure by keeping your heart and arteries in good condition.
- Being the right weight lowers blood pressure because your heart doesn’t have to work so hard.
- Try Yoga, it will reduce stress.
- Eat a healthy and well balanced diet.
- Limit the intake of alcohol.
- Avoid tobacco products and secondhand smoke.
- Cut your caffeine intake.
- Have cholesterol and triglycerides checked regularly.
- Increase your fiber intake.

Diet plays an important role during pregnancy. To maintain a healthy pregnancy, one should know what he can eat and what not.

FOOD THAT YOU SHOULD NOT EAT
- Avoid eating very high empty calorie foods without being nutritious.
- Alcohol in any amount is bad during pregnancy.
- Stay away from smoking and from people who smoke.
- Sushi i.e. raw fish and shellfish are definitely not safe to eat during pregnancy. They can harbor hepatitis, bacteria and parasites, all dangerous to women and their fetuses.
- Raw meats or uncooked beef or poultry should not be taken during pregnancy.
- Avoid high mercury fish during pregnancy.
- Eating soft or blue veined cheeses during your pregnancy will increase your risk of contracting listeria which is a form of bacteria that can potentially be very harmful to your baby.
- Caffeine intake should be limited.
- Un-pasteurized juice can harbor bacteria that can affect you and your baby.
- Deli meats including hot dogs which may contain listeria, a kind of bacteria should be avoided.
- Refrigerated smoked seafood should be avoided.
- Animal liver contains very high levels of vitamin A. Women who consume too much may risk a higher incidence of birth defects in their babies.

FOOD THAT YOU CAN EAT DURING PREGNANCY
- Pregnant women should eat at least 7 servings of fruits and vegetables in their diet as they are rich source of fiber, vitamins and minerals.
- Eat plenty of high fiber foods like cereals, whole-grain bread, pastas.
- Eat or drink at least four serving of dairy or calcium products.
- Eat iron-rich foods.
- Pregnant women should eat at least 60 gm of protein everyday. Eggs, nuts, dried beans are also good sources of protein.
- Folic acid should be taken regularly. It is a vitamin B that helps prevent serious birth defects of a baby’s brain and spine.
- Pregnant women should drink water regularly. They should not dehydrate themselves.

PAPAYA DURING PREGNANCY DURING PREGNANCY

Benefits of eating papaya during pregnancy can reduce indigestion, inflammatory bowel syndrome or heartburn. It is also rich in vitamins.
But it should be remembered that only fully riped papaya should be eaten. Even slightly unripe papaya has a latex like substance in it. This latex substance acts like prostaglandin and oxytocin which are generally use to induce labor and cause miscarriages. Consuming papaya during the early weeks of pregnancy should be avoided unless you are absolutely sure that it is fully ripe.
Hence, papaya is generally avoided by most women as a precautionary measure.

There can be many reasons for improper digestion. Indigestion is probably due to faulty eating habits or an improper balance of good bacteria in your gut.
- People suffering from indigestion should avoid taking alcohol especially beer, beverages containing caffeine, citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, tomato sauces, chocolate, spicy and fatty food, food made from refined grains such as maida and corn flour.
- Avoid eating big meals especially for dinner as they cause the stomach to produce extra acid to digest the food. Instead, eat small frequent meals.
- Include high fibre food such as wheat bread, brown rice and wheat pasta that contain whole grains, legumes with husk, fruits and vegetables in each meal. Try to have a small bowl of curd with each meal.
- Eat slowly and chew your food well.
- Eat dinner at least 2 hrs before sleeping.
- Avoid drinking too much fluid along with food.
- After eating, maintain upright position for at least 45 minutes.
- Do not do any vigorous activity.
- Include relaxation therapy and yoga to relax and de-stress.
- If you are taking antacids, the best time is approximately one hour after meals or just before the symptoms of reflux begin after the meal. Try another dose approximately two hours after the meal again.
- Keep your head elevated by 6-8 inches when lying down.
- Milk may provide a quick fix, it actually encourages the secretion of more acid during sleep.
- Smoking should be quit.
- Keep a track on your lifestyle and keep a record of what triggered your indigestion episodes.
- Try to have a pro-biotic supplement every day. Intestines contain lot of bacteria which help in digestion of food. Pro-biotic supplements provide billions of good bacteria in one shot. These are usually added to dairy products such as milk, curd, lassi, buttermilk, ice-cream or cheese.

Pro-biotics are also sold as special drinks such as yakut, powders or capsules. It may be a good idea to have a pr-biotic rich supplement once a day. It can be taken at any time of the day.

Bad breath is not a simple condition that you can easily shrug off and pretend it is not there. Halitosis, or bad breath is due to bacteria in the mouth breaking down proteins to volatile sulphur compounds that smell.

Causes of Bad Breath

- Bad breath by the food you take like onion and garlic.
- Bad breath due to smoking.
- Bad breath due to dry mouth: This means that one should keep drinking lot of water and other liquids as this helps in washing away left over food particles in the mouth, helps in stimulation of saliva and reducing conditions in which bacteria can thrive.
- Bad Breath caused by Dentures: These can cause bad breath if they are not cleaned frequently and properly.
- Bad breath caused by alcohol: It dries out the mouth reducing the saliva formation.
- Troubles with the pharynx, lungs or stomach.
- Hormones released right before the start of the menstrual cycle create a heavy concentration of sulphuric protein in saliva.
- Chronic bronchitis.
- Hunger.
- Morning breath.

How to prevent bad breath

- Brush your teeth and flossing twice a day, especially after meals that contain food and spices known to cause bad breath. Clean your tongue properly.
- Visit your dentist regularly at least twice a year. Cavities can cause bad breath too.
- Chew sugarless gum which helps stimulate saliva in the mouth.
- Avoid breath mints and mouthwashes that contain alcohol.
- Chlorophyll is a natural breath freshener and is found in leafy green vegetables like parsley.
- A few drops of peppermint or tea tree oil can be applied to the tongue or toothbrush to help freshen the breath.
- Baking soda maintains good oral health.
- Clean and replace your toothbrush regularly.
- Use mouthwash containing cetylpyridinium chloride, chlorine dioxide, sodium chlorite or zinc as they serve as an antibacterial agent.
- Eating plain yogurt for 6 weeks can sweeten your breath.
- Rinse your mouth before sleeping with a glass of water with the juice of half a lemon added.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Anaemia is a condition in which the red blood cells count decreases. Anaemia may be defined as a condition in which there is a decrease in the quantity of haemoglobin or in the number of red cells. The raw materials required in the production of these cells are iron, proteins, and vitamins, especially folic acid and B12. Of these, iron and proteins are essential in building up the red colouring matter called hemoglobin. When a person turns anaemic, his body tissues get lesser amount of oxygen.
The oxygen-carrying capacity is insufficient to meet physiologic needs, which vary by age, sex, altitude, smoking, and pregnancy status.
Red blood cells contain hemoglobin (Hb), a red, iron-rich protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to all of the body’s muscles and organs.

Causes of Anaemia

- Deficiency of iron is an important cause for anaemia.
- Excessive red blood cell destruction (‘haemolysis’).
- Deficient red blood cell production.
- Sudden blood loss.
- Improper diet.
- Women after conceiving a child suffer from iron deficiency that eventually leads to anaemia.
- Internal bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract.
- Diet low in vitamin B12 or folic acid.
- Lack of hydrochloric acid in the stomach or intestinal parasites or worms.
- Blood diseases such as leukaemia.
- Intestinal parasites or worms.
- Certain inherited blood diseases eg. thalassaemia- Infections, such as malaria.
- The body needs more iron when a large amount of cell divisions occur, such as in pregnancy and during periods of rapid childhood growth.

Signs and Symptoms of Anaemia

- Weakness and fatigue.
- Dull and Tiredness.
- Lack of energy.
- Shortness of breath.
- Premature wrinkles.
- Lack of stamina.
- Headache.
- Impaired memory and ability to think.
- Being intolerant of cold temperatures.
- Rapid pulse.

Types of Anaemia

- Iron Deficiency Anaemia: The body is running low on iron. The body needs iron to successfully produce haemoglobin the substance that carries oxygen throughout the body. The body is loosing blood faster than it is making it. This can be caused by gastritis, piles, stomach cancer, ulcers or bowel cancer.
- Vitamin B12 Deficiency Anaemia: Lack of folic acid, one of the B group of vitamins, in the bloodstream is the main cause of this deficiency. Alcoholism and inadequate intake of folic acid are the main causes of this deficiency.
