WHAT IS ANEMIA?
- Anemia is a disorder that results from decrease in the concentration of red blood cells or hemoglobin.
- One of the main functions of hemoglobin is to carry oxygen to tissues.
- Anemia results in decreased oxygen carrying capacity of blood.

COMMON CAUSES OF ANEMIA
- Bleeding (hemorrhage)
- Iron deficiency
- Body inability to produce sufficient red blood cells
- Hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells)
- Menstruation
- Pregnancy
- Lactation
- Peptic ulcer
- Piles
- Hiatus hernia
- Hookworm infestation

SYMPTOMS OF MILD TO MODERATE ANEMIA
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath

SYMPTOMS OF MODERATE TO SEVERE ANEMIA
- Rapid heartbeat
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Ringing in the ears
- Pale skin (especially the palms of your hands), pale or bluish fingernails
- Hair loss
- Restless leg syndrome
- Confusion

SYMPTOMS SPECIFIC TO SEVERE VITAMIN B12/FOLIC ACID DEFICIENCY ANEMIA
- Swelling of the mouth or tongue.

SYMPTOMS SPECIFIC TO PERNICIOUS ANEMIA
- Numbness, tingling
- Depression and/or irritability
- Memory loss

HOME REMEDIES FOR ANEMIA

1. Blackstrap Molasses
- Consider covering waffles or pancakes in a little molasses.
- Blackstrap molasses has long been known as a nutritional powerhouse.
- Molasses contain 3.5 mg of iron per tablespoon.
- Blackstrap molasses has been used in folk medicine as a “blood builder” for centuries.

2. Dry Cereal
- Many cereals are fortified with a nutrient punch of iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid.

3. Beef Liver
- Beef liver is rich in iron and all the B vitamins (including B12 and folic acid).
- Beef liver contains more iron per serving — 5.8 mg per 3 ounces — than any other food.
- Other animal sources of iron include :
• eggs,
• cheese,
• fish,
• lean sirloin,
• lean ground beef,
• chicken

4. Spinach
- Green leafy vegetables contain loads of iron and folic acid.
- Spinach has 3.2 mg of iron and 130 mcg of folic acid per 1/2 cup.

5. Other Home Remedies
- Cut way down on your intake of meats, milk, and eggs as this causes anemia caused by nutritional deficiency.
- These products cause iron from plant sources not to absorb by the body.
- Always check if adequate amounts of iron and vitamin B12 are included in your diet.
- Eat foods rich in vitamin C.
- Eat whole grains, spinach, and legumes.
- This will increase absorption of the iron in these foods.
- If you drink coffee or tea, do so between meals rather than with meals.
- Caffeine reduces iron absorption.

6. Juices and Pastes for beating Anemia
- Have beetroot juice, 1 cup of apple juice, mixed with either sugar or honey once a day.
- Consume a ripe banana with 1 tbsp of honey 2 times a day.
- Soak 10 currants overnight. Remove seeds and have them first thing in the morning for 3-4 weeks.
- Drink a mixture of apple and tomato juice.
- Eat a lot of green leafy vegetables.
- Honey helps increase the hemoglobin in the blood and it is rich in iron, copper and manganese.
