Amnesia is a condition that implies total or partial loss of memory.
There are different reasons and causes of amnesia such as organic or functional.
- Organic amnesia is caused due to damage to your brain by external factors which can be due to physical reasons like trauma or disease.
- Functional amnesia is due to psychological factors.

There are different types of Amnesia
- Anterograde amnesia
- Emotional/hysterical amnesia
- Lacunar amnesia
- Korsakoff syndrome
- Posthypnotic amnesia
- Retrograde amnesia
- Transient global amnesia

Causes of Amnesia
- Head injury
- Severe illness
- High fever
- Seizures
- Emotional shock or hysteria
- Alcohol-related brain damage
- Drugs
- Stroke
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Brain surgery

Home remedies for Amnesia

1.) Rosemary
- Rosemary is the best home remedy for amnesia.
- This herb is also known as the herb of remembrance,
- It can effectively cure mental fatigue and forgetfulness.

2.) Rosemary tea
- Prepare rosemary tea by adding 1-2 teaspoons of the herb to a cup (225ml) of boiling water.
- Let it steep for 5 minutes, strain the decoction and add a squirt of lime juice.
- Drink the tea once or twice, on a daily basis.

3.) Perennail booti
- This herb is also helpful in curing forgetfulness.
- Dry about seven grams of this herb in a shady place.
- Grind it, along with seven kernels of almonds and half a gram of pepper.
- Add water to form a decoction.
- Strain the decoction and add twenty-five gm sugar.
- Drink this mixture, on an empty stomach, every morning, for about a fortnight.

4.) Walnuts
- Walnuts work as effective memory enhancers.
- Consuming 20 gm walnuts every day, in the morning, will prove to be highly beneficial.
- If you add 10 gm of raisins or figs to walnuts, it is more beneficial.

5.) Almonds
- These are traditionally, considered to be the most effective memory booster.
- Soak about 10 almonds overnight.
- Peel off the brown skin in the morning and make a paste of it.
- Intake this paste, along with a tsp of butter, every morning.
- This works as a powerful memory enhancer and reduces needless anger.

6.) Holy basil leaves
- These leaves prove to be an effective memory enhancer.
- Boil the leaves in water and strain the decoction.
- Drink the decoction, after it cools down.
- You can also eat the leaves directly, after washing them with water.

7.) Brahmi
- Prepare a decoction of the herb, by steeping it in boiling water and straining the water.
- Let it cool down and consume it in the morning, on an empty stomach.

8.) Biofeedback
- This has proved to be a useful technique.
- In this process, the patient is made aware of his quantifiable bodily functions such as blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar and skin temperature.
- This raises the patient’s awareness as well as his conscious control of the involuntary physiological activities.

9.) Other remedies
- Patients suffering from amnesia should try to memorize this and recall everything, first thing in the morning.
- The right diet also acts as a memory booster.
- Include a lot of phosphorous-rich fruits in your diet, such as dates, oranges, figs, grapes, apple, almonds and walnuts.
- They help activate the brain cell and reduce forgetfulness.
- The most simple of all home remedies for amnesia is to have a tsp of honey, sprinkled with finely grounded black pepper, once a day. This will also help enhance memory.

Hemochromatosis (HE-mo-kro-ma-TO-sis) is a disease in which too much of iron builds up in your body (iron overload).

Overview
- Iron is a mineral found in many foods.
- Too much iron is toxic to your body.
- It can poison your organs and cause organ failure.
- In hemochromatosis, iron can build up in most of your body’s organs.
- It builds especially in the liver, heart, and pancreas.
- Too much iron in the heart can cause irregular heartbeats called arrhythmias (ah-RITH-me-ahs) and heart failure.
- Too much iron in the pancreas can lead to diabetes.
- If hemochromatosis isn’t treated, it may even cause death.

Too much iron in the liver can cause:
- an enlarged liver,
- liver failure,
- liver cancer,
- cirrhosis (sir-RO-sis): scarring of the liver, which causes the organ to not work well.

Signs and Symptoms of Hemochromatosis:
- Joint pain
- Fatigue
- Lack of energy
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of sex drive
- Heart problems
- Arthritis
- Amenorrhea
- Early menopause
- Loss of sex drive
- Impotence
- Shortness of breath
- Liver disease, including an enlarged liver, cirrhosis, cancer, and liver failure.
- Damage to the pancreas, possibly causing diabetes
- Chronic (ongoing) abdominal pain

The goals of treating hemochromatosis include:
- Reducing the amount of iron in your body to normal levels.
- Preventing or delaying organ damage from iron overload.
- Treating complications of the disease.
- Maintaining a normal amount of iron in your body for the rest of your life.
- The most effective treatment for hemochromatosis is to reduce iron in the body by phlebotomy (withdrawal of blood from the arm veins).
- One unit of blood, which contains 250 mg of iron, usually is withdrawn every one to two weeks.
- Serum ferritin and transferrin saturation are checked every two to three months.
- Once ferritin levels are below 50 ng/ml and transferrin saturations are below 50%, the frequency of phlebotomies is reduced to every two to three months.
- When hemochromatosis is diagnosed early and is treated effectively, damage to the liver, heart, testicles, pancreas and joints can be prevented completely.
- In patients with established cirrhosis, effective treatment can improve the function of the heart, skin color, and diabetes.
- The cirrhosis is irreversible and the risk of developing liver cancer remains.

The benefits of therapeutic phlebotomy in hemochromatosis are as follows:
- It prevents the development of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer upon early detection.
- It improves liver function partially in patients who have already developed advanced cirrhosis.
- It improves and completely resolves symptoms of weakness, liver pain, joint pain, and fatigue.
- It improves function of the heart in patients with mild and early heart disease.

What are dietary recommendations in hemochromatosis?
- A normal balanced diet is recommended.
- Iron containing foods are not totally avoided.
- Alcohol should be avoided.
- Alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cirrhosis and liver cancer.
- Ingestion of high doses of vitamin C in patients with iron overload may lead to fatal abnormal heart rhythms.
- It is reasonable to avoid vitamin C supplementation until patients are adequately treated.
- Raw seafood should be avoided.
- Patients with hemochromatosis are at risk of acquiring bacterial infections that flourish in iron rich environment.

Diagnosis of Hemochromatosis
- Medical history
- Perform a physical examination
- Order routine blood tests

How Blood Tests Help in Diagnosing Hemochromatosis ?
- Blood tests can determine if the amount of iron stored in the body is too high.
- The transferrin saturation test determines how much iron is bound to the protein.
- This is the protein that carries iron in the blood.
- The total iron binding capacity (TIBC) test measures how well your blood can transport iron.
- The serum ferritin test shows the level of iron in the liver.
- If any of these tests shows higher-than-normal levels of iron in the body, healthcare providers can order a special blood test to detect the HFE mutation.
- This test will help confirm the diagnosis of hemochromatosis.
- If the mutation is not present, hereditary hemochromatosis is not the reason for the iron buildup.

Serum transferrin saturation:
- This test measures the amount of iron bound to a protein (transferrin) that carries iron in your blood.
- Transferrin saturation values greater than 45 percent are considered too high.

Serum ferritin:
- This test measures the amount of iron stored in your liver.
- If the results of your serum transferrin saturation test are higher than normal then the doctor will check your serum ferritin.

Using a Liver Biopsy to Confirm the Diagnosis
- A liver biopsy is a procedure where a tiny piece of liver tissue is removed and examined under a microscope.
- This may be needed to confirm a hemochromatosis diagnosis.
- It will show how much iron has accumulated in the liver.
- It will show whether the liver is damaged as a result.

Additional testing

Testing for gene mutations:
- Your doctor can test a sample of your DNA for mutations in the HFE gene.
- This test can help confirm a diagnosis of hereditary hemochromatosis.

Removing a sample of liver tissue for testing:
- During a liver biopsy, your doctor removes a sample of tissue from your liver, using a thin needle.
- The sample is sent to a laboratory where it’s checked for the presence of iron and also for evidence of liver damage, especially scarring or cirrhosis.
- Risks of biopsy include bruising, bleeding and infection.

Screening healthy people for hemochromatosis:
- Doctor may recommend a blood test to determine if you have hemochromatosis even with no linked symptoms.
- Patients undergo screening tests to determine whether they have the condition before complications can occur.

Types of Hemochromatosis
The two types of hemochromatosis are primary and secondary.
- Primary hemochromatosis is caused by a defect in the genes. These genes control how much iron you absorb from food.
- Secondary hemochromatosis usually is the result of another disease or condition that causes iron overload.

Certain factors can affect the severity of the disease:
- A high intake of vitamin C can make hemochromatosis worse.
- This is because vitamin C helps your body absorb iron from food.
- Alcohol use can worsen liver damage.
- Cirrhosis caused by hemochromatosis.
- Conditions such as hepatitis also can further damage or weaken the liver.

How hemochromatosis affects your organs?
- Patients with hereditary hemochromatosis may absorb as much as 30 percent of the iron that is ingested.
- Your body can’t use or eliminate this extra iron, it’s stored in the tissues of major organs, especially the liver.
- Eventually you may accumulate five to 20 times as much iron as normal.
- Over a period of years, the stored iron can severely damage many organs, leading to organ failure and chronic diseases such as cirrhosis and diabetes.

Signs and Symptoms of Hemochromatosis:
- People with hemochromatosis absorb more iron than the body needs.
- The body has no natural way to rid itself of the excess iron, so it is stored in body tissues.
In particular, the:
- Liver
- Heart
- Pancreas.

Hemochromatosis symptoms tend to occur:
- In men between the ages of 30 and 50.
- In women over age 50.
- However, many people have no symptoms when they are diagnosed.
- Hemochromatosis can also develop in newborns and children.

Common Symptoms
- Joint pain is the most common symptom of hemochromatosis.
- Fatigue
- Lack of energy
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of sex drive
- Heart problems

Other Hemochromatosis Symptoms
- Arthritis
- Amenorrhea
- Early menopause
- Impotence (repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse)
- Shortness of breath.

Advanced Symptoms
Symptoms that can occur in advanced stages of hemochromatosis include:
- Arthritis
- Liver disease, including an enlarged liver, cirrhosis, cancer, and liver failure.
- Damage to the pancreas, possibly causing diabetes.
- Chronic (ongoing) abdominal pain.
- Severe fatigue.
- Weakening of the heart muscle.
- Problems with your heart rate or rhythms.
- Heart failure.
- Abnormal skin color.
- Skin looks gray or bronze.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic (lasting years and decades), progressive (worsening over time) disease of the bile ducts.
- This disease channelizes bile from the liver into the intestines.
- Bile is a watery liquid made by the cells of the liver that is important for digesting food in the intestine, particularly fat.
- This liquid also helps to get rid of the body of toxins.
- Liver cells secrete the bile they make into small canals within the liver.
- The bile flows through the canals and into larger collecting canals (ducts).
- The bile then flows within the intrahepatic bile ducts out of the liver and into the extrahepatic bile ducts.
- From the extrahepatic bile ducts, the bile flows into the intestine where the bile mixes with food.

In primary sclerosing cholangitis :
- The intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts become inflamed,
- scarred and thickened (sclerotic),
- narrowed,
- finally obstructed.

Obstruction of the ducts can lead to:
- abdominal pain,
- itching,
- jaundice,
- infection in the bile ducts (cholangitis),
- liver scarring that leads to liver cirrhosis,
- liver failure.

Symptoms of primary sclerosing cholangitis:
- Most patients with early primary sclerosing cholangitis have no symptoms.
- The presence of primary sclerosing cholangitis is recognized only because of abnormally elevated blood levels of liver enzymes (particularly alkaline phosphatase levels).
- This is often recognized along with a routine physical examination.
Early symptoms of primary sclerosing cholangitis include
- Fatigue
- bodily itching (pruritus)

With the progress of the disease:
- Patients may develop jaundice (yellowing of skin and darkening of urine).
- Jaundice is due to the accumulation of bilirubin in the body.
- The bilirubin accumulates because it is not able to be eliminated in the bile.
- This is due to prolonged obstruction of the bile ducts.
- The accumulation of bilirubin turns the skin and whites of the eye (sclera) yellow.
- It may be due to accumulation of bile salts in the body.
- It is as a result of obstruction of the bile ducts.

As primary sclerosing cholangitis progresses, patients typically develop:
- Right upper abdominal pain,
- Fever,
- Fatigue,
- Pruritus
- Jaundice
- These patients also are at risk of developing primary sclerosing cholangitis complications.
- The patients with the autoimmune form of primary sclerosing cholangitis have more rapid symptoms of abdominal pain, jaundice and fever.

Cirrhosis is a chronic (ongoing, long-term) disease of the liver. It means damage to the normal liver tissue.
- This tissue is the reason that keeps this important organ from working as it should.
- The liver gradually loses its ability to carry out its normal functions.
- This is called liver failure, which is also referred to as end-stage liver disease.
- The liver is the largest organ in the body and one of the most essential.

Causes of Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis can be caused by a number of conditions and sometimes there is no cause found too. This includes:
- Long-standing inflammation
- Poisons
- Infections
- Heart disease
- Chronic alcoholism
- Chronic hepatitis

When to seek medical attention?
- Sudden weight gain with increased size of your abdomen
- Increasing water retention
- Jaundice
- Changes in your mental faculties or behavior
- New or different responses to medications
- Bleeding that takes longer than usual to stop
- Blood in your vomit or stool
- Difficulty breathing
- Abdominal pain
- Confusion or bizarre behavior
- Repeated vomiting
- Fever

Exams and Tests
- Medical history
- Current symptoms
- Physical exam findings
- Has abused alcohol or IV drugs in the past or still do so.
- Known hepatitis
- Unexplained bleeding
- Jaundice
- Ascites (fluid building up in your abdomen)
- The condition may not be diagnosed until complications develop.

The steps in making the diagnosis of cirrhosis may include the following:

- Blood tests
To check whether the liver is functioning normally.
- Ultrasound
- CT scan
- Radioisotope scan
To look for signs of cirrhosis within or on the surface of the liver.

- Laparoscope
A very tiny camera inserted through a small slit in the abdomen to view the liver directly.
- Liver biopsy
Removing tissue from the liver and studying it under a microscope to identify fibrosis and scarring.

- Biopsy is the only way diagnosis can be 100% certain.

Cancer is a collection of many related diseases that are all characterized by one common feature. Some of these tumors do not spread beyond their point of origin. Others are capable of spreading large distances, often to other organs and tissues.	This process is called “metastasis”, and tumors which can metastasize are called “cancers”.

What is Brain Tumor?
Brain tumors can either originate from within the brain (“primary brain tumors”). From cancer cells that have metastasized from other organs or tissues (“secondary brain tumors”). Primary brain tumors can be derived from the over twenty different cell types that make up the brain and its linings.

What are Primary Brain Tumor?
Primary tumors can be cancerous (malignant) or benign. These tumours start in the brain and do not spread. They rarely spread beyond the central nervous system. The tumor is still taking up space in the skull. They can cause serious complications and symptoms.

Primary Brain Tumor Types in Adults

- Gliomas
Tumors derived from astrocytes:
- Anaplastic astrocytoma (“grade III”)
- Glioblastoma multiforme
Tumors derived from oligodendrocytes:
- Oligodendrocytes
- Oligodendrogliomas
Tumors derived from ependymal cells:
- Ependymomas
- Anaplastic ependymomas
Meningiomas
- Consequences of intracranial hypertension.
- Dysfunction Irritation.

What are Secondary Brain Tumor?
- These tumours are often called metastatic tumors.
- They are the result of cancer cells originating from another part of the body.
- They are spread to the brain.
- Secondary brain tumors often indicate advanced stages of disease.
- Both cancerous primary and secondary tumors are life threatening.
- These types of tumors are usually very aggressive.
- Secondary tumors means a cancerous neoplasm that has developed in another organ elsewhere in the body
- These cancer cells have leaked from that primary tumor and then entered the lymphatic system and blood vessels.
- They then circulate through the bloodstream.
- They are then deposited in the brain.
- These cells continue growing and dividing.
- They become another invasive neoplasm of the primary cancer’s tissue.
- Secondary tumors of the brain are very common in the terminal phases of patients.

Other Types of Growth
1. Low-grade vs. high-grade:
- Low-grade tumors are slow-growing.
- High-grade tumors are fast-growing and aggressive.
- High-grade tumors can invade nearby tissue or spread elsewhere in the body.
- They are also more likely to recur after treatment.
- They are generally associated with a worse outlook.

2. Localized vs. Invasive:
- Localized tumor is confined to one area.
- It is generally easier to remove.
- It’s in an accessible part of the brain.
- An invasive tumor has spread to surrounding areas.
- It is more difficult or impossible to remove completely.

Proper breathing does not mean that you need to do chanting or be in search of your chi to try meditation. It is a simple way to make you feel more centered; a way to get your mind and body readjusted to a normal healthy lifestyle. The five steps that would help you to breathe properly:

Proper breathing is the most important function that is performed by us. It increases the energy level. Oxygen is an important chemical and is a powerful stimulant. Deep breathing recharges the hemoglobin. Breathe energy as well as air. It will increase the electromagnetic flow into your body, which will bring up suppressed feelings.

- Take out 5 min out of your busy schedule
One needs to take out uninterrupted five minutes out of their schedule. It is usually how long people need to start getting their central nervous system back to normal.

- Sitting Posture
It is not necessary to sit cross legs to start meditation. Sitting on a sturdy chair where your back is in upright position without leaning. Back should be in comfortable position.

- Sense your senses
Do not think and start focusing on your senses. Inhale and exhale in a slow and controlled manner. Listen to the sounds pulsating around you like birds outside your window or traffic in the distance.

- Just eliminate distractions
Space with positive image is very important. All kind of distractions should be eliminated. It is suggested how appropriate colors, smells and images can help you to calm you down and focus on breathing as compared to a cluttered work area. It can bring bad vibes.

- Explore your surroundings
Sometimes, people find it difficult to meditate alone, explore your surroundings and find a group or check out different books, CDs, DVDs and web sites.

- Let your mind be free
Initially you may find it difficult to concentrate in one direction and free your mind from thoughts of work or family. Human mind has a tendency to wander towards the issues that tend to stress you the most. You have to push them aside. Try to find the problems that bothers you and then you will see that it becomes easy to conquer them.
