What is Gout?

• Gout is a type of inflammation of the joints and swellings of a recurrent type.
• Gout is chronic in character and occurs in acute attacks.
• Gouty arthritis is another very painful condition that would require immediate treatment. Gout is essentially a form of arthritis.
• This condition is characterized with sudden bouts of severe pain, inflammation and tenderness in the joints, known as gout attacks.
• Gout is known to be quite debilitating at times because of the severity.
• The excruciating pain can cause you to wake up in a sweat.
• This is described as a feeling of fire or burning sensation in the afflicted joint.

• Excessive Alcohol, Heredity, Rich Foods, Lack of Exercise also Causes Gout

Home Remedies for Gout

7. Treating Gout using Charcoal
• Make a paste of water and half a cup of charcoal powder.
• This remedy is perfect for gout of the foot.
• The infected foot can be soaked in this mixture completely.
• Soak it for at least 30 minutes to an hour for pain relief.

8. Treating Gout using Herbs
- Some of the herbs that can be used for gout pain relief include:
• Devil’s claw root
• White willow bark
• Ginger root
• Meadowsweet flower tops and leaves
- The above herbs contain powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
- They relieve pain caused in gout.
- Other herbs like cayenne, licorice, boswellia and feverfew are natural gout remedies.

9. Treating Gout with Safflower
• Safflower can be taken in capsule form.
• This speeds up the healing process in the case of gout.
• Safflower has properties which help in improving circulation.
• This also helps in cleansing the blood.
• It will also alleviate the pain caused in gout.

10. Treating Gout using Ginger
• If you suffer from gout in the toes then a mixture of water and 1/3 cup of ground ginger is very effective.
• The feet can be soaked in this mixture for 30 minutes.
• This will cause sweating and therefore elimination of uric acid.
• It is important to bathe thoroughly after following this remedy.
• This is because ginger could cause skin irritation once the skin dries.

11. Treating Gout using Mustard
• Prepare a paste by mixing one part whole wheat powder and one part mustard powder in water.

Gout Diet

- Fast of Orange Juice and Water
• For an acute attack, there is no better remedy than a fast of orange juice and water.
• In severe cases, it is best to undertake a series of short fasts for three days.
• The above is better than rather than one long fast.

- All Fruit Diet
The patient must adopt an all fruit diet for three or four days.

- Natural Food diet
A well-balanced diet of natural foods, with emphasis on fresh fruits, raw vegetables, and sprouts can be adopted thereafter.

- Avoid Purine and Acid Producing Foods
The patient should avoid all purine and uric acid-producing foods like:
• All meats
• Eggs
• Fish
• Tea
• Coffee
• Sugar
• White flour
• Canned, processed, and fried foods

- Vegetables that need to be avoided are:
• Spinach
• Asparagus
• Cauliflower
• Legumes like beans, lentils and peas

Other Gout Treatments

1. Warm Water Enema
• A warm-water enema should be used daily.
• This will help to cleanse the bowels during this period.

2. Epsom Salt Bath
• Epsom salts foot baths should be taken twice daily.
• About 250 gm – 500gm of these salts may be added to hot water.
• Full Epsom salt baths should also be taken three times a week.
• The baths may be reduced to two per week later.

3. Cold Packs, Fresh Air, Exercise, Reduced Stress
• Cold packs should be applied to the affected joints at night.
• This will be beneficial.
• Fresh air and outdoor exercise are also essential.
• The patient should eliminate stress.

Gout Treatments

• Make it a point to rest.
• Do not try to use the affected joint.
• Instead take rest with the affected joint elevated if possible.
• Use a cane or walking stick for support if uncomfortable in walking.
• Ice packs or cold compresses are useful in gout treatment for some relief from the pain.
• These packs also reduce the inflammation.
• Try applying hemorrhoid creams to the affected area to reduce inflammation.
• Keep well hydrated to minimize the risk of further gout attacks.

Home Remedies for Gout

1. Treating Gout using Cherry
• Consume about fifteen to twenty cherries a day, as soon as you wake up.
• One can begin to reduce the amount of cherries that are consumed.
• Cherries for treating gout showed that an antioxidant in cherries called anthocyanins helps to relieve inflammation.
• It also reduces the frequency of gout flare-ups.
• It is best to consume fresh cherries.

2. Gout Treatment using Vegetable Juices
• Raw vegetable juices are useful for gout treatment.
• A mocktail of carrot, beetroot and cucumber juice seems to be effective.
• Add 100 ml of beetroot and 100 ml of cucumber juice to 300 ml of carrot juice.
• Consume it on a daily basis.

3. Treating Gout using French Beans
• The juice of French or string beans has also proved to be effective in treating gout.
• About 150 ml of this juice should be taken daily.

4. Treating Gout using Apple
• Apples are regarded as an excellent source for curing gout.
• The malic acid contained in them is believed to neutralize the uric acid.
• It will afford relief from gout.
• Take one apple after each meal.

5. Treating Gout using Banana
• Bananas have been found beneficial in the treatment of gout.
• A diet of bananas only for three or four days is advised for providing some relief from gout.
• A patient can take eight or nine bananas daily during this period.

6. Treating Gout using Lime
• Lime is also used as a source in treating gout.
• Vitamin C is known to prevent and cure sore joints.
• Vitamin C strengthens the connective tissues of the body.
• The juice of half a lime, squeezed into a glass of water should be taken.
• Take it twice daily.
