What is meant by GERD?

• GERD is an acronym for Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease.
• This is a condition where there is a backflow of gastric acid into esophagus.
• It is also called as reflux or reflux esophagitis.

Symptoms for GERD

• Heartburn
• Regurgitation of gastric acid or sour contents into the mouth
• Difficulty while swallowing anything
• Pain in the chest
• Coughing
• Inflammation in vocal chords
• Dissolution of tooth enamel
• Excessive salivation

• Gagging

1. Fennel seeds
Chewing fennel seeds, one teaspoon, after meals help during GERD

2. Dried peppermint leaves
• Dried pepper mint leaves also provide one of the effective home relief during the condition.
• Steep a teaspoon of dry peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water for few minutes.
• Later consume this mixture when it is hot.
• Do this at least twice in a day for improving digestion.

3. Ginger
• Take a small piece of ginger and crush it.
• Boil with a cup of water for few minutes.
• Consume the mixture either after the meals or during the day.
• Use of ginger as spice in the diet is another way of consuming it.
• Soak a piece of ginger in a teaspoon of lemon juice and add salt to it.
• Consume it as taste enhancer with the meals regularly.

4. Chamomile
• Drinking chamomile tea is very beneficial.
• Chamomile tea relieves nervous system and soothes gastrointestinal tract.
• This tea is best when consumed before bedtime.

5. Caraway Seeds
• Try adding caraway seed spice to more of your meals.
• Caraway seeds ease gas, indigestion and cramping.
• It also stimulates proper digestion.

6. Apple cider vinegar
• Mix two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water.
• Sip this mixture during the meals.
• This can also be consumed after meals too.

7. Cumin, fennel and celery
• One can prepare a powder or mixture for regular use.
• Roast seeds of cumin, fennel and celery and grind them.
• Sprinkle this powder on salad or food.
• Consume a teaspoon of this powder after meals and swallow it with a cup of water.

8. Parsley
• Adding more parsley to your diet is also a very good remedy.

Diet for GERD

• Some foods may initiate belching such as milk and sugars.
• Certain types of vegetables and fruits containing a particular type of starch are not well digested by the stomach.
• These treat bacteria in the stomach such as: beans, lentils, cabbage, bananas, apricots, prunes, onions and sprouts.
• Foods made from whole grains may also cause gas.
• Weight loss, avoid tight clothes and maintain a food diary.
• A walk after meals is excellent to prevent all types of disorders related to digestive system.
• There are certain yoga poses and exercises which are excellent in treating digestive disorders.
• Staying active and maintaining a food diary to check food allergies and intolerant foods is a good practice.
• Getting dentures checked regularly also helps in treating the problem.

Yoga as a remedy for GERD

• Lie down on a mattress on the floor.
• Lift left leg and bring the knee close to your chest after bending it.
• Bring it further closer by hugging it and hold it there for few seconds.
• Repeat this with another leg and then with both the legs.
• This is wonderful yoga exercise for releasing trapped gas in the stomach.
