Nephritis or Inflammation of Kidneys – Causes, Symptoms, Remedies and Diet



Nephritis is the inflammation of one or both the kidneys. Nephritis can be acute or chronic. It is a very serious disease. Acute nephritis, is most commonly caused by hypersensitivity ( allergy ) to drug therapy. Chronic nephritis, can similarly be due to a very large number of causes, including drug hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, infections, radiation of the kidney.

CAUSES OF NEPHRITIS

- Wrong eating habits.
- Weak immunity system.
- Acute nephritis can be caused by erysipelas, strep throat, scarlatina, flu or other similar conditions.
- Myeloma and low blood pressure.
- Metabolic disorders.

SYMPTOMS OF NEPHRITIS

- Pain in the kidneys that extends down to ureter.
- Fever.
- Dull pain in the back.
- Scanty and colored urine.
- Urine may contain blood, albumin, and casts consisting of clumps of red and white cells.
- Puffiness on face.
- Swelling of feet and ankles.
- Rise in blood pressure.
- Patient may develop uraemia.
- Nausea.
- Loss of appetite.

REMEDIES FOR NEPHRITIS

- Bananas are low in protein and salt and have high carbohydrate content. It should be taken for three or four days.
- Coconut water taken once or twice a day is very beneficial for the treatment of nephritis.
- Grapes have high content in water and potassium salts and they are an excellent remedy for acute and chronic nephritis.
- Avocado has large mineral and small protein contents and are very valuable as a staple food in nephritis.
- A glass of carrot juice mixed with a tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of fresh lime juice taken everyday is an effective remedy.

DIET FOR NEPHRITIS

- Fasting on vegetable juices for 7-10 days as it removes the toxins and impurities responsible for inflammation of kidneys.
- Try all fruit diet for 4-5 days after fasting on vegetable juices.
- Try a well balanced, low protein vegetarian diet.
- Refrain from eating vegetables like spinach which contain large quantities of oxalic acid.
- Juicy fruits such as apple, grapes, orange, pear, peach and pineapple should be taken during this period.
- Smoking and drinking, where habitual, must be completely given up.
- Chocolate should be avoided.
- The patient should avoid white bread, sugar, cakes, pastries, puddings, refined cereals, greasy, heavy or fried foods. Avoid tea, coffee, all flesh foods, condiments, pickles and sauces.
