What are different kind of stomach problems faced now-a-days?
Most stomach ulcers, cancers and gastritis are caused by the bacteria named Helicobacter Pylori.
The capacity of the stomach to store food can be reduced to make us feel full sooner. The procedure, known as bariatric surgery is a blessing for those with uncontrolled obesity, and related complications such as diabetes.
Bacteria can live in moist and warm areas of the body, and the stomach is an ideal habitat. Healthy bacteria breaks down minerals, vitamins and complex carbohydrates. Harmful bacteria invade the protective mucus layer and can cause infections and inflammations.
Gastric secretions and muscular waves almost disappear when we are depressed. Stress increases acid production. Also, coffee, nicotine and alcohol increases acid production.
- Gastritis: It is the inflammation of the stomach lining that is caused by excessive usage of alcohol or prolonged use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Acid reflux: It is the flow of stomach contents into the oesophagus. Heartburn occurs because the oesophagus does not have a protective lining.
- Peptic Ulcer: It is a sore where the stomach lining has been eaten away. Burning pain is the symptom. It will get worse if it is left untreated.
- Gastric Cancer: It can develop anywhere in the stomach. It causes good amount of deaths worldwide annually. Symptoms include indigestion, heartburn and loss of appetite. In advanced stages, symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, bloating after meals, weight loss, fatigue and bleeding in vomit or stools.
- Vomiting: It is the expulsion of the stomach contents through mouth, and even nose. Nausea is the feeling that one is about to vomit. It can also lead to dehydration. The pyloric sphincter relaxes, and, through retroperistasis, contents from the middle of the small intestine upwards are forced out. The color, content and frequency of vomit may indicate the condition.

What diet should be taken to avoid from gastric troubles in-spite of taking normal food?
There can be many reasons for improper digestion. Indigestion is probably due to faulty eating habits or an improper balance of good bacteria in your gut.
- People suffering from indigestion should avoid taking alcohol especially beer, beverages containing caffeine, citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, tomato sauces, chocolate, spicy and fatty food, food made from refined grains such as maida and corn flour.
- Avoid eating big meals especially for dinner as they cause the stomach to produce extra acid to digest the food. Instead, eat small frequent meals.
- Include high fibre food such as wheat bread, brown rice and wheat pasta that contain whole grains, legumes with husk, fruits and vegetables in each meal. Try to have a small bowl of curd with each meal.
- Eat slowly and chew your food well.
- Eat dinner at least 2 hrs before sleeping.
- Avoid drinking too much fluid along with food.
- After eating, maintain upright position for at least 45 minutes.
- Do not do any vigorous activity.
- Include relaxation therapy and yoga to relax and de-stress.
- If you are taking antacids, the best time is approximately one hour after meals or just before the symptoms of reflux begin after the meal. Try another dose approximately two hours after the meal again.
- Keep your head elevated by 6-8 inches when lying down.
- Milk may provide a quick fix, it actually encourages the secretion of more acid during sleep.
- Smoking should be quit.
- Keep a track on your lifestyle and keep a record of what triggered your indigestion episodes.
- Try to have a pro-biotic supplement every day. Intestines contain lot of bacteria which help in digestion of food. Pro-biotic supplements provide billions of good bacteria in one shot. These are usually added to dairy products such as milk, curd, lassi, buttermilk, ice-cream or cheese.
Pro-biotics are also sold as special drinks such as yakut, powders or capsules. It may be a good idea to have a pr-biotic rich supplement once a day. It can be taken at any time of the day.

Cure Acidity…
We all suffer from acidity at some point or the other. Acidity occurs when there is excess secretion of acids in the gastric glands of the stomach. When the secretion is more than usual, we feel, what is commonly known as heartburn, which is normally triggered off by consumption of spicy foods.
Some home remedies for curing acidity are :
- Skip the aerated drinks as well as caffeine. Opt for herbal tea instead.
- Have a glass of lukewarm water everyday.
- Include banana, watermelon and cucumber in your daily diet. Watermelon juice is great for curing acidity.
- Nariyal paani is known to soothe the system if you suffer from acidity.
- Drink a glass of milk everyday.
- Have your last meal at least two or three hours before you hit the sack.
- Eat at regular intervals. Have small but regular meals.
- Try to avoid pickles, spicy food, vinegar during acidity.
- Boil some mint leaves in water and have a glass of this after meals.
- Excessive smoking and drinking will increase acidity.
- Try chewing gum. The saliva generated helps move food through the esophagus, easing symptoms of heartburn.
- Ginger acids in digestion.
- A simple preparation of lemon water with sugar can be sipped on an hour before lunch to reduce uneasiness.
- Have vegetables like drumsticks, beans, pumpkin, cabbage, carrot and spring onions.
