The common cold is something that infects a huge number of people at any point of time, especially when the weather changes or it starts getting colder. Rare would be the person who has not been affected by the common cold. So, what is the common cold ? What are the symptoms, and what is the problems that it causes in people ? How long does the common cold last ?
Common cold is caused by a type of virus known as rhinoviruses, and is a actually a combination of problems that affect the nose and the throat (infection of these passages). Some of the symptoms of the common cold are also similar to the symptoms of influenza, and to some extent, that of mild ‘strep’ throat (which is not caused by a virus, but by a bacteria). In all these cases, proper medical attention can distinguish between them. One of the biggest problems in terms of perception about the common cold is that increased exposure to cold weather causes the cold, but this is not backed out by medical facts.
What are the symptoms of common cold ? Some of the most indicators are: cough, nasal congestion, low fever (normally does not cross 100°F, but can go upto 102°F), and a running nose. Then there are other indicators such as mild aches, scratchiness in the throat, changed voice (temporary change), and sneezing (that leaves you weak when you do sneeze) and also a slight pain in the back when you laugh heartily (you actually beg for people not to make you laugh). A running nose is mentioned, but it is actually one of the biggest indicators. And then you have some side effects that really effect you in terms of your efficiency: tiredness / weakness, headache, occasional muscle aches, tears in your eyes; these latter set of symptoms actually set you back a lot in terms of your capacity to do any kind of work (when I get a cold, I get all of these, and then do nothing but relax at home, since working is impossible when these effects of the cold are at their worst).
Initially, the nose running is very clear for the first few days, and then starts thickening (and getting colored) up over a period of time as the body gets into the infection fighting mode. These immune cells, manufactured by the body to fight the infection, also end up in the discharge from the nose and cause the thickening and coloring up of the discharge. This last bit is somewhat controversial, since many doctors apparently consider the thickening and coloring up of the discharge as an indicator of a bacterial infection, and prescribe antibiotics, but most medical personnel have met have confirmed that the discharge having a color is not an indication that there is a bacterial infection along with the viral infection.
Why do believe that more cold weather can cause an increased chance of the common cold. Well, this is because these weather conditions are actually more conducive for the virus that causes the common cold (and the humidity levels in the atmosphere is also lower).
I hope the above information helps people. Keep in mind however, that other problems such as influenza have some common symptoms with the common cold and if your cold problem is not going away, it is essential that you consult your doctor and get more scientific advice besides trying to read up on the internet.

Common cold includes running nose, sore throat, coughing and sneezing. Many viruses causes common cold out of which rhino-virus is the most common type. The condition of the mucous that comes from the nose (commonly known as a runny nose) changes over a time period. In the initial days of the cold, the mucous is transparent, being just meant to wash germs from the nose. After a period of around two days, there is a fight back by the body’s immune system, which makes the mucous more white. As the helpful bacteria in the nose starts to come back, the mucous starts to get a tinge of green.

The symptoms of a common cold are running nose, sore throat, sneezing, watery eyes, headache and body aches, cough and stuffed nose.

For minor symptoms of common cold:
- Drink good amount of fluids and take a lot of rest.
- Take pain relievers and a decongestant but do not use if you have high blood pressure.
- For sore throat tea with honey relieves the dysphagia.
- Fresh air stimulates the circulation and provides oxygen to body.
- Lime Juice is the most effective remedy for common cold. Take a glass of lukewarm water and dilute the lime juice in it. You can add a tablespoon of honey to enhance its efficiency.
- Take steam for cleaning nasal and pre-nasal areas.
- Avoid the things that trigger cold.
- Try some breathing exercises for fresh air circulation.
- Wash hands very regularly.
- Do not touch your face, nose, ears, mouth as common cold spreads on touching.
- The disposable items should be used if someone in your family is infected.
- Maintain proper hygiene and healthy lifestyle.
- Emotional stress should be controlled.

Infection by cold viruses can be causes by either touching your skin or environmental surfaces that have cold germs on them and then touching your eyes or nose. It can also be caused by inhaling drops of mucus full of cold germs from the air.

See a doctor if temperature is higher than 100.4° F and the symptoms last more than 10 days and they are not relieved by over-the-counter medicines.

There is a common misconception that antibiotics can cure common cold. The fact is that antibiotics are used for treating a bacterial infection and not a viral infection. You should use antibiotics only when the doctor subscribes.

There is an important reason why colds are so common in children is because they are often in close contact with each other in daycare centers and schools.

Asthma is a problem in which there is an airways blockage and it is a lung disorder. Air is carried in and out of the lungs through tubes called airways. In asthma, the bronchial tubes are inflammed which causes swelling and the air pathways are narrowed which in turn causes breathing problems. Asthma can be severe. In severe asthma attacks, the airways are narrowed to such an extent that vital organs do not gt enough oxygen. Asthma can cause death if not prevented on time. Asthma can be categorized into allergic asthma and asthma induced due to exercise. Asthma attack can last for few hours or few days.

CAUSES OF ASTHMA ATTACK
- Allergic to pollen.
- Allergic to dust.
- Climate change.
- Respiratory infections.
- Too much stress.
- Allergic to tobacco.
- Hereditary.
- Exposure to airborne allergens.
- Exposure to some viral infections in childhood.
- Paints.
- Animal fur.

SYMPTOMS OF ASTHMA ATTACK
- Problem in breathing.
- Wheeziness.
- Cough.
- Chest tightness.
- Swelling.
- Breath shortness.
- Asthma attack can get worse in morning and night.
- Asthma attack gets worse with exercise.
- Skin between the ribs is pulled while breathing.
- In case of emergency, bluish color appears on lips and face, pulse increases rapidly, state of confusion, severe anxiety, sweating, abnormal breathing pattern, chest pain.

PREVENTION OF ASTHMA ATTACK
- Identify the allergens that exist indoors and try to avoid them.
- Avoid environmental tobacco smoke.
- Avoid dust mites.
- Allergens from pets, cockroaches and other pests should be avoided.
- Pollen season depends on where you live. Be extra careful in pollen season.
- Avoid certain foods like fish, egg, peanuts, soy, wheat that can prove allergic.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF ASTHMA
Diagnosis of asthma includes checking the physical history, blood tests, chest x-ray, lungs test, allergy test. Asthma is treated with two kinds of medicines: quick-relief medicines to stop asthma symptoms and long-term control medicines to prevent symptoms. It is treated in three ways:
- Monitoring the symptoms of asthma.
- How to avoid the triggers to cause asthma.
- Treatment with medications.
- Visit the doctor.

The respiratory system plays a vital role in delivering oxygen to the body, fuel for all the body’s
functions. It also removes carbon dioxide waste, eliminates toxic waste, regulates temperature, and stabilizes blood acid-alkaline balance (pH).
Respiration is the set of events that results in the exchange of oxygen from the environment and carbon dioxide from the body’s cells. Respiratory system includes nose, throat, voice box, windpipe, and lungs.
There are many types of respiratory disease. They are often classified as obstructive or restrictive lung diseases and respiratory tract infections.

- Asthma: A condition in which the airways of the lungs become either narrowed or completely blocked, obstructing normal breathing. It may improve or worsen with age.
Symptoms : Sudden shortness of breath, wheezing, or coughing.
Causes : Inflammation of the lungs due to allergens, extreme climates, physical activity, stress, and many other factors.

- Bronchiolitis : It is an inflammation of the bronchi, the large airways inside the lungs. The inflammation causes these passages to increase their production of mucus that is thick and yellow or grey in color, which is then coughed up.

- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) : This is a chronic bronchitis/emphysema type disease. It is characterized by permanent, reduced lung capacity.
Long-term smoking often causes emphysema. It becomes difficult to breathe and get enough oxygen into the blood. In bronchitis, the membranes lining the larger bronchial tubes become inflamed and an excessive amount of mucus is produced.
Symptoms : Shape of the chest changes, chronic cough, tightness in chest, lung infections.
Oxygen therapy is beneficial and will allow patients who are suffering from COPD to be more active.

- Cystic fibrosis (CF) : It is the most common inherited disease affecting the lungs. It causes the body to produce a thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs, leading to infection, and blocks the pancreas, stopping digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines where they are required to digest food.

- Influenza : It is an acute, contagious, respiratory tract infection, which is caused by one of the influenza viruses.
Symptoms : fever, coughs and muscle aches, sore throat, runny nose, muscle and headaches, fatigue, cough, diarrhoea and dizziness.

- Pneumonia : Pneumonia is an infection of the lung tissue. This inflammation of the lungs usually occurs because of bacterial or viral infection.
Symptoms : Intense, sometimes painful cough, chest pain, fever and, due to the nature of pneumonia’s involvement with the lungs, difficulty in breathing.

- Common Cold : Inflammation in the upper respiratory tract, the common cold is the most common respiratory infection.

- Lung Cancer : It is caused by an abnormal growth of cells in the lungs. It starts in the lining of the bronchi and takes a long time to develop.
Symptoms : Includes a persistent cough that may bring up blood, chest pain, hoarseness, and shortness of breath.

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a respiratory disease caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis.
- Call the doctor if you suspect that your child has whooping cough.
- Depending on the symptoms, whooping cough is commonly treated with antibiotics.
- Infants and younger children are more likely to be hospitalized because they’re at greater risk for complications.
- Increase the intake of fluids.
- Treatment also includes rest, a cool-mist vaporizer, and supplemental oxygen may be needed to treat hypoxia.

Home Remedies for treating whooping cough

- Take a spoon of syrup made of radishes and raw cane sugar everyday.
- Take about one teaspoon of garlic juice 2-3 times everyday.
- Take 1tsp of fenugreek seeds + 1 cup of water + 1tsp of ginger + some honey. Boil the ingredients and drink.
- Have a cup of grape juice, mixed with a tsp of honey, on a daily basis.
- Take 10 drops of ginger juice and insert five drops of almond oil in it. Also add few drops of onion juice in it. Taking this mixture three times a day.
- Mix a pinch of calamus powder with honey and take twice a day.
- Cut a small slice of ginger and dip it in some rock salt and lemon juice. Store this in an airtight container. Lick this whenever the cough attacks.
- Avoid eating foods like milk, dairy products, refined flour products, rice and sugar products, etc which increases phlegm.
- Dry the herb of belleric myroblan and cover it with wheat flour. Now, roast the herb and consume it.
- Take a tablespoon of aloe vera juice and honey which are mixed in equal parts.
- Roast and powder the root of turmeric. Take 3 grams of this powder, along with milk, two times a day.
- Crush a medium-sized onion and add the juice of one lemon to it. Now, pour a cup of boiling water over it and add a tsp of honey. Take this 2 to 3 times a day.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis) is a bacterial infection of the lungs which is caused by a bacterium Bordetella pertussis.
- It is a disease of respiratory system.
- It is highly contagious.
- It’s characterized by severe coughing spells that end in a “whooping” sound when the person breathes in.
- The whoop originates from the inflammation and swelling of the laryngeal structures that vibrate when there is a rapid inflow of air during inspiration.
- The coughing is the body’s way of trying to get rid of thick mucus (say myoo-kus) from the lungs.
- It begins with cold and a mild cough and effects the respiratory tract and the lungs.
- It may occur to any person of any age but is more common in infants and children below four years of age.
- It is due to bacterial infection in the breathing passage.
- The incubation time is about seven to fourteen days.

Causes of Whooping Cough

- It is caused by micro-bacterial organisms.
- Adino-viruses, respiratory viruses and Para-influenza are conditions that can also affect whooping cough.
- Wrong feeding habits with refined and de-mineralized foods and absence of fresh fruits and vegetables is however the actual cause.

Symptoms of Whooping Cough

- Early symptoms include runny nose, dry cough, and low-grade fever.
- Cough becomes severe with time.
- During the episodes of coughing the face can become red or blue (cyanosis) due to a lack of oxygen.
- Tiredness.
- Loss of appetite.
- Sore throat.
- Symptoms also include vomiting after a coughing episode, coughing up thick phlegm, and fatigue.
- Extreme symptoms can be fractured ribs, hernia, and broken blood vessels in the eyes and on the skin.
- In infants, extreme symptoms may include dehydration, pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, and respiratory arrest.

Prevention of Whooping Cough

- Stay home from school and away from other people.
- See a doctor.
- Take plenty of rest.
- Eat healthy food.
- Drink lots of water.
- Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.

Diagnosis of Whooping Cough

Diagnosis is based on symptoms, physical examination, and culture or DFA (direct fluorescent antibody) testing of nasopharyngeal secretions.

Lung cancer in its early stage and sometimes even later may not cause any signs and symptoms. In its advanced stage, the cancer cells interfere with normal lung function. The symptoms associated with lung cancer can result from the original tumor or from tumors that have spread to other organs. The cancers are usually identified incidentally when a chest x-ray is performed for another reason.

Common signs and symptoms of lung cancer are :

- A cough that does not go away and gets worse over time.
- Coughing up blood (hemoptysis) or bloody mucus.
- Chest, shoulder, or back pain that doesn’t go away and often is made worse by deep.
- Hoarseness.
- Weight loss and loss of appetite.
- Increase in volume of sputum.
- Wheezing.
- Shortness of breath.
- Repeated respiratory infections, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.
- Repeated problems with pneumonia or bronchitis.
- Fatigue and weakness.
- New onset of wheezing.
- Swelling of the neck and face.
- Clubbing of the fingers and toes. The nails appear to bulge out more than normal.
- Some patients may have paraneoplastic syndromes which are caused by biologically active substances that are secreted by the tumor.

Symptoms related to metastasis

Lung cancer that has spread to the bones may produce excruciating pain at the sites of bone involvement. Cancer that has spread to the brain may cause a number of neurologic symptoms that may include blurred vision, headaches, seizures, or symptoms of stroke such as weakness or loss of sensation in parts of the body.

Paraneoplastic symptoms

Lung cancers frequently are accompanied by symptoms that result from production of hormone-like substances by the tumor cells. These hormone related symptoms vary from person to person but may include:
- Pins and needles or numbness in fingers or toes.
- Muscle weakness.
- Drowsiness, weakness, dizziness or confusion.
- Breast swelling in men.
- Blood clots (thrombosis).
These symptoms are uncommon with lung cancer but they can happen.

Symptoms of pancoast tumours

Lung cancer growing right at the top of the lung is called a ‘pancoast tumour’. The symptoms include :
- Drooping or weakness of one eyelid.
- Small pupil in that eye.
- Loss of sweating on that same side of the face.

If any symptoms is found, it is better to consult a doctor because only doctor can make a diagnosis.

Cancer is a group of many related diseases that begin in cells, the body’s basic unit of life. Normally, cells grow and divide to produce more cells only when the body needs them. Sometimes, however, cells become abnormal and keep dividing to form more cells without control or order, creating a mass of excess tissue called a tumor.

Cancer is a broad term that encompasses over one hundred different types of cancer. Although each type has its own set of characteristics, there are some cancer symptoms that occur in many types of cancer. It is important to note that some types of cancer do not present any symptoms until they are in advanced stages. This is why cancer screening and risk assessment are vital for cancer prevention and early detection.

Cancer gives most people no symptoms or signs that exclusively indicate the disease. Unfortunately, every complaint or symptom of cancer can be explained by a harmless condition as well. Some common symptoms that may occur with cancer are as follows:
- Persistent cough or blood-tinged saliva.
- Persistent Fatigue : It is usually more common when the cancer is advanced, but still occurs in the early stages of some cancers. Anemia is commonly the culprit — a condition that is associated with many types of cancer, especially types affecting the bowel.
- Weight loss : Losing 10 pounds or more unintentionally definitely warrants a visit to the doctor. This type of weight loss can occur with or without loss of appetite.
- Pain : It is not an early symptom of cancer, except in some cancer types like those that spread to the bone. Pain generally occurs when cancer spreads and begins to affect other organs and nerves.
- Bowel Changes : If you experience constipation, diarrhea, blood in the stools, gas, thinner stools, or just a general overall change in bowel habits, see your doctor.
- Chronic Cough : A persistent, new cough or a cough that won’t go away or becomes worse needs to be evaluated by a doctor.

Recovery is a temporary journey of re-adjustment during which the mind and body are allowed to undergo an amazing healing process. Withdrawal effects of giving up smoking surface almost immediately after you have called it quits. During the initial phase the effects may present themselves in an intense shape. But, there is no need to worry much about it. These effects subside as time passes.
The first few weeks after quitting smoking are usually the most difficult and it’s safe to say that it normally takes at least 8-12 weeks before a person starts to feel comfortable with their new lifestyle change of being an ex-smoker.

Nicotine Withdrawal Symptoms :

- Cravings to smoke : Cravings for a cigarette are frequent and intense within the first two to three days after stopping. The cravings become less frequent over the next four or five days, but they may increase again and persist for many weeks. Deep breathing and immediate activity will help distract you from your craving. The worst of the cravings usually end within a couple of weeks after breaking free.
- Irritable, cranky : When the nicotine level declines, your body begins to sense the loss. This can cause tension and be symptomatic of the grief process. Deep breathing and exercise will help relieve irritability.
- Insomnia : Your sleeping patterns may be affected once you stop smoking. Difficulties in sleeping will occur due to the absence of nicotine in the brain. Furthermore, lack of sleep will affect your moods in the daytime and also leave you feeling tired and drained.
- Inability to Concentrate : Take regular short breaks from what you are doing, try to eat healthy energizing foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, drink lots of water to keep the brain hydrated, exercise or keep active and get plenty of fresh air.
- Headache : Half an aspirin should do the trick, but beforehand try to relieve the tension by carrying out a few deep breathing exercises, drinking a glass of water, taking a relaxing bath, going for a gentle walk in the fresh air or lying down for 15 minutes or so. As a last resort take the aspirin.
- Cough : Drinking water and sucking boiled sweets may help to ease the cough, loosen the mucus in your lungs, keep your throat moist and flush the toxins out of your system.
- Tiredness : To boost your energy levels, avoid sugary and processed foods, drink lots of water, snack on seeds, nuts or dried fruit, go for a short but brisk walk if you are feeling tired, take a break from what you are doing and relax and make sure that you eat a good healthy breakfast, which will keep you going at least through the morning.
- Sore throat : A small number of people who stop smoking are affected by chemical changes in their mouths and may suffer minor problems including blisters, sores, and inflammation.
- Constipation, gas, stomach pain : Try to eat fiber-rich foods and lots of fresh fruit and vegetables; prunes are good, drink 8 glasses of water a day and carry out some gentle exercise to stimulate your bowels. Some say that eating chocolate helps too.
- Tightness in the chest : This happens because your body is getting more fresh air than usual. The extra air fills the lungs and makes them feel tighter. This symptom should last for only a day or two after stopping. See your doctor if it persists.
- Tingling sensations : After giving up smoking, your circulation will improve, as more of your smaller blood vessels will open up allowing more oxygen to flow through you body.
- Fatigue
- Dry mouth
- Sore tongue and/or gums
- Postnasal drip
