Prognosis,Complications of Blepharitis and what can be done to treat it.

September 2nd, 2010

Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids. Signs and symptoms of blepharitis include red, irritated, itchy eyelids, and the formation of dandruff-like scales on the eyelashes.

Ignorance and no treatment can cause some complications in case of blepharitis :
- Sty: A bacterial infection in one of the oil glands. The opening of the gland is clogged. You can feel a painful lump on the edge or inside of your eyelid.
- Chalazion: It occurs when a blockage in one of the oil glands causes that gland to become enlarged and scarred.
- Chronic pink eye: Blepharitis can lead to recurrent bouts of pink eye (conjunctivitis).
- Ulceration of the cornea: Ulcer can be caused to develop on your cornea due to constant irritation from inflamed eyelids or misdirected eyelashes.

Good hygiene and regular cleaning of the area can control signs and symptoms of blepharitis and prevent complications. It can be done through :
- Warm Compress : Soak a clean, soft cloth with warm water and place the cloth over the closed eye. The frequency of this treatment should be confirmed by the doctor. The warmth in it can open up a blocked residue.
- Eyelid cleaning : Soak a clean cloth into the cleansing solution (recommended by the doctor) and wipe the cloth over the eyelashes and margin of the lids and then gently wash the eye with cold water.
Change the cloth, and repeat the process for the other eye.
- Antibiotic ointment : Using a clean fingertip or cotton swab, gently apply a small amount at the base of the eyelashes before bedtime. Artificial tears or steroid eye drops may also be prescribed temporarily to relieve dry eye or inflammation.
- Eye make up should be avoided or immediately removed.
- If the eyes are dry, lubricating eyedrops or artificial tears may help.

Helpful Hints for avoiding problems…

July 7th, 2010

Prevention is better than cure. People get careless when their back is not hurting and they start doing all the things that they should not do to avoid back ache.
Precautions that you should take are :
- Your neck is best ruined when you hold the phone between your head and shoulders to avoid using your hands. Use a mouthpiece or else get a speaker phone to avoid this situation.
- People who say that in order to lift something, always bend your knees and crouch down to pick up something from floor level are not wrong. You should avoid leaning over from the waist to grab it. It creates a stress on the lower vertebrae.
- Driving for a longer time and in a wrong posture can create bad back ache. Take frequent breaks to get out and stretch. Keep your knees elevated and for that keep your seat as far forward. Keep doing neck exercises and shoulder lifts while you drive.
- Do not continue sitting in the same posture for longer periods. Take breaks to exercise and stretch your neck and upper back. Place a stool to elevate your knees and feel comfortable. You will feel comfortable if the lower part of your buttocks or lower back are pushed against the back of the chair.
- If the body is not prepared for active sports, then you should avoid playing active sports over the weekend. If you are planning to play a cricket match over the weekend with a gang of friends, spend a few extra minutes with the routines for the whole week preceding the get-together.
- Always turn to either of your side with knees close to the edge of bed to get up instead of keeping the legs flat on the bed, and straining the muscles of your lower back.

How is staging determined for thyroid cancer?

May 3rd, 2010

If the diagnosis is thyroid cancer, the doctor needs to know the stage, or extent, of the disease to plan the best treatment. Staging is a careful attempt to learn whether the cancer has spread and, if so, to what parts of the body.
Staging is based on the results of the physical exam, biopsy, and imaging tests, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, chest x-ray, and/or nuclear medicine scans.
The TNM method is the most universally used staging method and applies to both papillary and follicular thyroid cancers.
- T indicates the size of the main (primary) tumor and whether it has grown into nearby areas.
- N describes the extent of spread to nearby (regional) lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are small bean-shaped collections of immune system cells that are important in fighting infections. Cells from thyroid cancers can travel to lymph nodes in the neck and chest areas.
- M indicates whether the cancer has spread (metastasized) to other organs of the body. If there is distant metastases, M = 1, if the cancer has not spread outside of the neck region, M = 0.

Based on these three categories, the cancer is assigned a Stage of 1, 2, 3 or 4. Stage 1 is the least advanced form of cancer with the best prognosis, and Stage 4 is the most advanced category.
