INITIAL STEPS

Stop the bleeding:
- The first thing to do (after admonishing yourself for being so clumsy) is to stop the bleeding.
- Apply pressure to the area with a clean cloth or tissue.
- Elevate the wound above the heart to slow the blood flow.
- Don’t use a tourniquet as it cuts off circulation.

Wash up:
- Clean it thoroughly with soap and water or an over-the-counter cleanser.
- Hibiclens is one of them and that doesn’t sting.
- Pour hydrogen peroxide onto the wound, if it is very dirty.
- As it bubbles, it will lift out debris.
- Apply it carefully, because hydrogen peroxide can damage surrounding skin.

Bring on the antibacterial ointment:
- Antibacterial ointments and solutions are helpful.
- Polysporin, Neosporin, and Bactine are examples.

Clean with iodine:
- Use a tincture of iodine or povidone-iodine for minor cuts and bruises.
- Iodine kills bacteria and viruses effectively.

Close the skin:
- Properly closing the skin is important.
- Closing makes the cut heal faster.
- It also reduces the chances of scarring.
- Apply butterfly strips or a standard adhesive bandage to keep the cut closed.

Cover it:
- Use Telfa, a coated, gauze-type bandage instead of a guage that tends to stick to the wound.
- Don’t cover it too tightly.
- A bit of air circulation actually facilitates healing.

Keep it clean:
- Remove the bandage and wash the wound every day with soap and water.
- This will prevent infection.
- Then apply a clean bandage.

Don’t let it dry out:
- Keep the wound moist.
- This will help prevent cracking, speed healing, and reduce the chance of scarring.

If a scab forms, don’t pick at it:
- This disrupts the skin and can introduce bacteria.
- Soak crusty scabs with a solution of one tablespoon white vinegar to one pint of water.
- The mildly acidic solution is soothing and helps kill bacteria.

At night, keep the wound moist with a water/petrolatum regimen
Cover the wound with a little petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline) to seal in the moisture.

Don’t get locked up:
- Consider having a tetanus shot within 72 hours.

Protect it from sunlight:
- Avoid sun exposure during the healing process.
- Apply over-the-counter hydrocortisone to the wound.

The following vitamin and mineral supplements are recommended to aid in rapid healing:
- Beta-carotene. Take 25,000 international units a day.
- Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). Take 50 milligrams a day
- Vitamin C. Take 3,000 to 5,000 milligrams a day.
- Vitamin E. Take 400 international units a day
- Zinc. Take 50 to 100 milligrams a day.

Different Home Remedies
- Cover the cut with a mixture of zinc oxide cream and vitamin-E oil.
- Calendula gel or ointment stimulates fast healing at the skin’s surface.
- Clove oil is high in eugenol, a compound that is both an antiseptic and a painkiller.
- You can sprinkle powdered cloves on a cut to prevent infection.
- Comfrey roots and leaves contain allantoin, which stimulates cell division and speeds wound healing.
- It also avoids scar formation.
- Echinacea is also Commission E-approved as a topical treatment for superficial cuts.
- This herb has powerful immune-stimulating properties.
- Drink a cup of echinacea tea three to four times a day to strengthen your immune system to speed healing.
- Goldenseal contains several antiseptic compounds.
- Apply a poultice of crushed goldenseal root to any minor cuts.
- Yarrow is excellent for stopping bleeding.
- Sprinkle powdered yarrow extract onto the cut.
- A great home remedy for cuts is turmeric powder.
- This can be applied to a cut to promote healing and prevent infection.
- Wash the cut thoroughly and then put garlic oil or crushed garlic on a band aid.
- Washing the cut or scrape with soap, dose it with vitamin E oil, aloe vera gel or cod liver oil.
- Use cayenne pepper to stop the bleeding of cuts and scratches.
- Wash the wound with a good soap. Then apply a thick layer of Vaseline.
- Yarrow leaves and flowers have been used for their blood-clotting, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving qualities.

There are a number of herbal first-aid creams available:
- Calendula in echinacea-and-comfrey combinations
- Calendula blended with white sage
- Elder flower, and chickweed;
- Calendula mixed with goldenseal propolis and myrrh.

Nails are made of keratin, the same type of protein in your hair.
Each nail actually consists of several parts, all of which play an important role in its health and growth:

- Nail plate
This is what you see as the fingernail.
- Nail bed
This lies below the nail plate; the two are attached. The capillaries in the nail bed nourish the nail and give it its pinkish color.
- Nail matrix
It’s below the cuticle at the base of the nail. Cells in the matrix produce the fingernail. If the matrix gets damaged, your nail will be not in shape or may even stop growing completely.
- Lunula
This is the part of the matrix that you can see. It’s the half-moon-shaped portion at the bottom of your nail.
- Cuticle
This fold of skin, made of dead cells, keeps foreign substances, such as infection-causing bacteria, out.
- Nail fold
This is the ridge of skin around the nail.

Facts about Nails:
- Nails can become brittle during the summer months in the sun and swimming.
- Sun and chlorine can make your nails brittle.
- To protect your fingernails while washing dishes, gardening, or cleaning with any type of harsh chemicals, wear gloves.
- If your nails are brittle, do not use perfumed lotions that have alcohol.
- This will cause the nails to become brittle.
- Do not bite your nails.
- Quit using your nails to scrape stuff off the counter top, or off of the dishes.
- Do not use them to open letters.
- Soaps and cleaners will dry out your hands and nails.
- Always use a hand lotion or cream after washing your hands.

Some of the causes of nail problem are:
- Iron deficiency will cause your nails to become spoon shaped.
- Your nails may become clubbed.
- Swelling around the ends of your fingers.
- Sometimes your toes are swollen.
- It might be if you have a respiratory or heart problem.
- If you have psoriasis your nails may become pitted.
- The biggest nail problem seen in toe nails is ingrown.
- Another nail problem is discoloration.
- As you get older your nails develop vertical ridges.

Main Home Remedies
- Avoid the culprits like the detergents and cleansers.
- Keep your nails short.
- Be careful of nail bangers in place of a screwdriver, a scraper, or other tool.
- Moisturize your nails. Your nails contain no fat, so they can’t naturally hold in moisture.
- Complex 15, Aquaderm, and Moisturel are some of the phosphates which can be tried.
- Avoid moisture when your nail becomes infected, particularly with a yeast organism.
- Care for your cuticles and don’t cut them with a mechanical instrument, which breaks down the cuticle’s natural protection from bacteria and moisture.
- Don’t pick or tear at hangnails by making a break in the skin where bacteria can enter and can cause infection.
- Realize the risk with nail cosmetics.
- Forget formaldehyde.
- Cut down on polish remover. Nail polish remover contains acetone, which dries nails.
- Don’t eat gelatin in a hope to build strong nails.
- Use of calcium. It helps build bones but has little or nothing to do with the hardness of your nails.

Home Remedies from the Cupboard
- Baking soda. Clean your nails and soften cuticles by scrubbing them with a nailbrush dipped in baking soda.
- Use Vinyl gloves, Cotton gloves
- Use Biotin
- Soaking painful ingrown nails in a warm saltwater solution will help ease the pain and relieve swelling.
- Add 1 tablespoon salt per quart of water and soak for 30 minutes.
- A saltwater soak can also make tough nails easier to trim.
- Try soaking nails in the same solution for five to ten minutes before trimming.

There are very few nail problems or disorders. Most are associated from the results of injury, from a nutritional, respiratory, or heart disorder. The nail problem can be seen as discoloration or deformity.

What are nails made of?
- They are made of a hard protein called keratin.
- Our nails protect our fingers from injury
- It takes around 90 days for our fingernail and toenails to grow from the base to the tip.

Some of the causes are:
- Iron deficiency will cause your nails to become spoon shaped.
- Your nails may become clubbed.
- Swelling around the ends of your fingers.
- Sometimes your toes are swollen.
- It might be if you have a respiratory or heart problem.
- If you have psoriasis your nails may become pitted.
- The biggest nail problem seen in toe nails is ingrown.
- Another nail problem is discoloration.
- As you get older your nails develop vertical ridges.

The cause is the mal absorption of:
- Vitamins A
- B complex
- Vitamin C
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Zinc
- Other essential fatty acids

Reasons for discolored nails can include:
- Anemia -very pale nails.
- Liver Problems-nails turn kind of whitish.
- Bacterial- your nails will have dark spots in them that resemble splinters.
- Fungi infections- your nails can turn whitish and soft or even crumble.
- White spots can be caused from a deficiency of zinc or Vitamin A.

There are preventive measures like:
- Keep your finger nails short.
- Wear gloves when working outdoors in your garden.
- Wear rubber gloves if you are always immersing your hands in water.
- Remember to wash your hands and nails when they come in contact with any type of chemicals like cleaning products.
- The best prevention for ingrown nails is to trim your toe nails straight across.
- Wear shoes that do press on your toenails.

What do you do to keep your nails healthy?
- Nail care is as important as keeping your body and hair clean.
- Eat foods that have calcium, iron, vitamin B and potassium.
- Foods like seafood, dairy products, celery, soy should be included.
- Drink 8 glasses of water each day to keep your body from dehydrating.
- Your nails need water just like your hair and body.
- If your nails are splitting or are weak it could be from not drinking enough water.

There are some natural home treatments which should be taken 4 times a day for up to 3 weeks for the following nail problems:

- In the case of brittle nails, try Antimonium 6c.
- If your nails become deformed with white spots, try Silicea 6c.
- If your nails start to get thick, deformed, start to crumble and are swollen and painful, try Graphites 6c.
- If your nails are brittle with red and swollen skin at the base you should, try Thuja 6c.
- For any finger nail problem you can always soak your nails two times a day in Calendula solution, or apply Calendula ointment.

Treatment for Ingrown Nails
- Put a very small piece of cloth between the side of the nail and the skin.
- Completely bathe your toe with Hypericum and Calendula solution – 5 drops of each to ½ pint of boiled water that has cooled.

Other home remedies for nail problems that involve your toe nails are:

- Magnetic austr. 30c.
- Brittle toe nail problems us Thuja 30c.

Hemochromatosis (HE-mo-kro-ma-TO-sis) is a disease in which too much of iron builds up in your body (iron overload).

Overview
- Iron is a mineral found in many foods.
- Too much iron is toxic to your body.
- It can poison your organs and cause organ failure.
- In hemochromatosis, iron can build up in most of your body’s organs.
- It builds especially in the liver, heart, and pancreas.
- Too much iron in the heart can cause irregular heartbeats called arrhythmias (ah-RITH-me-ahs) and heart failure.
- Too much iron in the pancreas can lead to diabetes.
- If hemochromatosis isn’t treated, it may even cause death.

Too much iron in the liver can cause:
- an enlarged liver,
- liver failure,
- liver cancer,
- cirrhosis (sir-RO-sis): scarring of the liver, which causes the organ to not work well.

Signs and Symptoms of Hemochromatosis:
- Joint pain
- Fatigue
- Lack of energy
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of sex drive
- Heart problems
- Arthritis
- Amenorrhea
- Early menopause
- Loss of sex drive
- Impotence
- Shortness of breath
- Liver disease, including an enlarged liver, cirrhosis, cancer, and liver failure.
- Damage to the pancreas, possibly causing diabetes
- Chronic (ongoing) abdominal pain

The goals of treating hemochromatosis include:
- Reducing the amount of iron in your body to normal levels.
- Preventing or delaying organ damage from iron overload.
- Treating complications of the disease.
- Maintaining a normal amount of iron in your body for the rest of your life.
- The most effective treatment for hemochromatosis is to reduce iron in the body by phlebotomy (withdrawal of blood from the arm veins).
- One unit of blood, which contains 250 mg of iron, usually is withdrawn every one to two weeks.
- Serum ferritin and transferrin saturation are checked every two to three months.
- Once ferritin levels are below 50 ng/ml and transferrin saturations are below 50%, the frequency of phlebotomies is reduced to every two to three months.
- When hemochromatosis is diagnosed early and is treated effectively, damage to the liver, heart, testicles, pancreas and joints can be prevented completely.
- In patients with established cirrhosis, effective treatment can improve the function of the heart, skin color, and diabetes.
- The cirrhosis is irreversible and the risk of developing liver cancer remains.

The benefits of therapeutic phlebotomy in hemochromatosis are as follows:
- It prevents the development of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer upon early detection.
- It improves liver function partially in patients who have already developed advanced cirrhosis.
- It improves and completely resolves symptoms of weakness, liver pain, joint pain, and fatigue.
- It improves function of the heart in patients with mild and early heart disease.

What are dietary recommendations in hemochromatosis?
- A normal balanced diet is recommended.
- Iron containing foods are not totally avoided.
- Alcohol should be avoided.
- Alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cirrhosis and liver cancer.
- Ingestion of high doses of vitamin C in patients with iron overload may lead to fatal abnormal heart rhythms.
- It is reasonable to avoid vitamin C supplementation until patients are adequately treated.
- Raw seafood should be avoided.
- Patients with hemochromatosis are at risk of acquiring bacterial infections that flourish in iron rich environment.

Signs and Symptoms of Hemochromatosis:
- Joint pain
- Loss of sex drive
- Heart problems
- Amenorrhea
- Early menopause
- Loss of sex drive
- Shortness of breath
- Liver disease, including an enlarged liver, cirrhosis, cancer, and liver failure.
- Damage to the pancreas, possibly causing diabetes
- Chronic (ongoing) abdominal pain

Diagnosis of Hemochromatosis
- Medical history
- Perform a physical examination
- Order routine blood tests

How Blood Tests Help in Diagnosing Hemochromatosis ?
- Blood tests can determine if the amount of iron stored in the body is too high.
- The transferrin saturation test determines how much iron is bound to the protein.
- This is the protein that carries iron in the blood.
- The total iron binding capacity (TIBC) test measures how well your blood can transport iron.
- The serum ferritin test shows the level of iron in the liver.
- If any of these tests shows higher-than-normal levels of iron in the body, healthcare providers can order a special blood test to detect the HFE mutation.
- This test will help confirm the diagnosis of hemochromatosis.
- If the mutation is not present, hereditary hemochromatosis is not the reason for the iron buildup.

Serum transferrin saturation:
- This test measures the amount of iron bound to a protein (transferrin) that carries iron in your blood.
- Transferrin saturation values greater than 45 percent are considered too high.

Serum ferritin:
- This test measures the amount of iron stored in your liver.
- If the results of your serum transferrin saturation test are higher than normal then the doctor will check your serum ferritin.

Using a Liver Biopsy to Confirm the Diagnosis
- A liver biopsy is a procedure where a tiny piece of liver tissue is removed and examined under a microscope.
- This may be needed to confirm a hemochromatosis diagnosis.
- It will show how much iron has accumulated in the liver.
- It will show whether the liver is damaged as a result.

Additional testing

Testing for gene mutations:
- Your doctor can test a sample of your DNA for mutations in the HFE gene.
- This test can help confirm a diagnosis of hereditary hemochromatosis.

Removing a sample of liver tissue for testing:
- During a liver biopsy, your doctor removes a sample of tissue from your liver, using a thin needle.
- The sample is sent to a laboratory where it’s checked for the presence of iron and also for evidence of liver damage, especially scarring or cirrhosis.
- Risks of biopsy include bruising, bleeding and infection.

Screening healthy people for hemochromatosis:
- Doctor may recommend a blood test to determine if you have hemochromatosis even with no linked symptoms.
- Patients undergo screening tests to determine whether they have the condition before complications can occur.

Types of Hemochromatosis
The two types of hemochromatosis are primary and secondary.
- Primary hemochromatosis is caused by a defect in the genes. These genes control how much iron you absorb from food.
- Secondary hemochromatosis usually is the result of another disease or condition that causes iron overload.

Certain factors can affect the severity of the disease:
- A high intake of vitamin C can make hemochromatosis worse.
- This is because vitamin C helps your body absorb iron from food.
- Alcohol use can worsen liver damage.
- Cirrhosis caused by hemochromatosis.
- Conditions such as hepatitis also can further damage or weaken the liver.

How hemochromatosis affects your organs?
- Patients with hereditary hemochromatosis may absorb as much as 30 percent of the iron that is ingested.
- Your body can’t use or eliminate this extra iron, it’s stored in the tissues of major organs, especially the liver.
- Eventually you may accumulate five to 20 times as much iron as normal.
- Over a period of years, the stored iron can severely damage many organs, leading to organ failure and chronic diseases such as cirrhosis and diabetes.

Signs and Symptoms of Hemochromatosis:
- People with hemochromatosis absorb more iron than the body needs.
- The body has no natural way to rid itself of the excess iron, so it is stored in body tissues.
In particular, the:
- Liver
- Heart
- Pancreas.

Hemochromatosis symptoms tend to occur:
- In men between the ages of 30 and 50.
- In women over age 50.
- However, many people have no symptoms when they are diagnosed.
- Hemochromatosis can also develop in newborns and children.

Common Symptoms
- Joint pain is the most common symptom of hemochromatosis.
- Fatigue
- Lack of energy
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of sex drive
- Heart problems

Other Hemochromatosis Symptoms
- Arthritis
- Amenorrhea
- Early menopause
- Impotence (repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse)
- Shortness of breath.

Advanced Symptoms
Symptoms that can occur in advanced stages of hemochromatosis include:
- Arthritis
- Liver disease, including an enlarged liver, cirrhosis, cancer, and liver failure.
- Damage to the pancreas, possibly causing diabetes.
- Chronic (ongoing) abdominal pain.
- Severe fatigue.
- Weakening of the heart muscle.
- Problems with your heart rate or rhythms.
- Heart failure.
- Abnormal skin color.
- Skin looks gray or bronze.

- Primary hemochromatosis is caused by a defect in the genes. These genes control how much iron you absorb from food.
- Secondary hemochromatosis usually is the result of another disease or condition that causes iron overload.

The basic two types of hemochromatosis are:
- Hereditary hemochromatosis: Hemochromatosis is mainly associated with a defect in a gene called the HFE gene.
- Acquired hemochromatosis: It occurs as a result of certain medical conditions.

Primary Hemochromatosis
- It is inherited from their parents.
- If you inherit two hemochromatosis genes—one from each parent—you’re at risk for iron overload.
- The two faulty genes cause your body to absorb more iron than usual from the foods you eat.
- The severity of hemochromatosis also varies.

Certain factors that can affect the severity of the disease are:
- A high intake of vitamin C can make hemochromatosis worse.
- This is because vitamin C helps your body absorb iron from food.
- Alcohol use can worsen liver damage.
- Cirrhosis caused by hemochromatosis.
- Conditions such as hepatitis also can further damage or weaken the liver.

Hereditary Hemochromatosis
- It is caused by a mutation in a gene that controls the amount of iron your body absorbs.
- The mutations that cause hereditary hemochromatosis are passed from parents to children.

Gene mutations that cause hemochromatosis:
- The gene that is mutated most often in people with hereditary hemochromatosis is called HFE.
- You inherit one HFE gene from each of your parents.
- If both parents pass mutated HFE genes to you, you may develop hemochromatosis.
- The HFE gene has two common mutations, C282Y and H63D.
- Genetic testing can reveal whether you have these mutations in your HFE gene.

If you inherit two abnormal genes:
- One may develop hemochromatosis.
- Not everyone with two abnormal genes develops signs and symptoms of hemochromatosis.
- You can also pass the mutation on to your children.

If you inherit one abnormal gene:
- One won’t develop hemochromatosis.
- But your body may absorb more iron than normal.
- You are considered a gene mutation carrier and can pass the mutation on to your children.

Other types of hemochromatosis

Juvenile hemochromatosis
- This causes the same problems in young people that hereditary hemochromatosis causes in adults.
- Iron accumulation begins much earlier and symptoms usually appear between the ages of 15 and 30.
- Although juvenile hemochromatosis is an inherited disease, the genetic abnormalities that cause it don’t involve the HFE gene.
- It is caused by a mutation in a gene called hemojuvelin.

Neonatal Hemochromatosis
- In this severe disorder, iron builds up rapidly in a baby’s liver and can cause death.

Dizziness or feeling faint is a normal symptom during pregnancy. It is more common in the first quarter, but may also be common during the whole pregnancy. During this time, the cardiovascular system will undergo some dramatic changes:
- The heart rate increases.
- The heart pumps more blood per minute and the amount of blood in the body expands by an average of 40-45%.
- The capacity of the circulatory system also increases as blood flows to the enlarged uterus and placenta.
Pregnancy is a time of change and body changes make you more apt to feel dizzy or light headed.

Causes:
The main reason of dizziness during pregnancy due to increased hormones that cause blood vessels to relax and widen. This helps to increase the blood flow to the baby, but delays the return of blood in the veins. This makes the blood pressure to be lower than usual, which can reduce blood flow to the brain, temporarily causing dizziness.
Early in pregnancy, dizziness is probably due to the fact that the body still is not producing enough blood to fill the rapidly expanding circulatory system.

Dizziness is also caused by low blood sugar that may occur when the body adapts to changes in their metabolism. Women who are anemic or who have varicose veins may be more susceptible to motion sickness than others.

During the second trimester, dizziness may be caused by the growing uterus puts pressure on blood vessels. Reduced blood flow to the brain, sometimes turn the head. You may feel dizzy if the blood sugar decreases or becomes dehydrated.

Dizziness can also occur later in pregnancy if you lie on the back so that the baby’s weight to press into the vena cava. Another possible reason you feel dizzy during pregnancy is that you are spending too much time in a warm room or stuffy nose, especially if you are wearing clothes too tight or hot. Remember, the body is a furnace to make babies, which generates a lot of their own heat right now.

Treatment:
There are several things can be done to reduce the amount of drowsiness you experience. You can leave a sickness on his way to bed as soon as you start to feel lightheaded. Elevate the feet to increase blood flow to the brain. Second best: Sit and bend forward as you can, put the head between the knees, if possible. If there is no place to lie down or sit, kneel on one knee and leaning forward as if tied to his shoe until the spell passes.

Here are some helpful suggestions to reduce dizziness during pregnancy:

- Avoid standing for long periods. If you are standing, be sure to keep the feet moving to help increase circulation.
- Stand up slowly, either sitting or lying down (This is very important when you are out of the bathtub).
- Eat regularly. Avoid long periods between meals, it is best to eat during the day.
- Avoid hot baths or showers.
- Avoid lying on the back once you get to half of its second quarter.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing to avoid restricting circulation.

Sometimes the dizziness can be a symptom of shock after severe blood loss. If you feel faint, dizzy or faint, have any vaginal bleeding, and/or abdominal pain; contact the midwife, doctor or maternity unit – which is faster – immediately.
Health care provider must be immediately consulted if dizziness is accompanied by vaginal bleeding and/or pain in abdomen. This could be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, a low-lying placenta, or placental abruption.
