About the Blister
- Blisters are a very common thing.
- We come across them very often in our daily lives.
- The common forms of blisters are the ones where the blister is raised and filled with a liquid.
- These can also be found in your mouth.
- They are smaller than canker sores.

Friction blisters are caused by friction by doing things
- With your bare hands,
- Wearing a new shoe,
- Due to heat, frostbite,
- Chemical injury or friction

Blood blisters
- Blood blisters are mainly developed due to a smash or punching injury.
- This kind of injury ticker the blood between the skin layers causing it to be a blood blister.

Self-Care Measures
- If the blister is due to burns, it is best to put pour or soak the injured part in ice-water.
- To avoid blisters on your feet, one must apply Vaseline or petroleum jelly all over your feet before wearing shoes to avoid any friction.
- You can wear silk under socks to prevent blisters.
- Rub baby powder on your feet.
- This prevents blisters appearing on your feet.

Home Remedies for Blisters
- Provide a cool compress to the blister by soaking a towel in a mixture of salt and ice-cold water.
- Apply 10 percent tannic acid to the required areas of the skin, twice daily.
- Continue this application for two to three weeks to make your skin stronger and healthier.
- Sweating causes further inflammation of the blisters.
- To get your feet dry, soak them in a mixture of epsom salt and warm water.
- Do this by the end of the day for five minutes and later soak it dry for best results.
- You can treat broken blisters by applying few drops of Listerine to disinfect the wound as this works like a wonderful antiseptic.
- You can apply aloe vera gel or juice, vitamin E oil or zinc ointment on the blisters to alleviate pain.
- Garlic oil also helps in disinfecting the infected blisters.
- Dab blisters with witch hazel at least four times a day.
- This would relieve pain and also help in drying process of the blister.
- Garlic oil is known to heal due to the presence of astringent tannin.
- Aloe vera, vitamin E oil, or zinc ointment will help heal a blister.
- Puncture gently with clean & sterilized needle and place a tiny bit of Neosporin.
- Place a corn pad (inner portion of circular removed) and place over the blister until it heals.
- Do not drain the blister.
- Do not remove the overlying skin.
- Place an adhesive donut bandage, over the blister for protection and comfort.
- Do not use one of those liquid bandages over a pierced blister.
- “Tent” the bandage by bringing in its sides so the padding in the middle of the bandage rises up a bit.
- A tented bandage will help protect the blister while exposing it to air.
- This will make the blister heal with speed.
- Another type of bandage, available in pharmacies, contains a gel and antiseptic to cushion and “clean” the blister which is known as the double padded bandage.
- Give your blister a chance to “breathe” by going without a bandage occasionally.
- Apply an antibacterial/antibiotic ointment to it.
- Doctors generally recommend Bacitracin or Polysporin.
- Try using the circular pads made of foam adhesive found in the foot-care aisle of drug.
- Elevating the blistered area can help relieve the pressure.
- To drain a blister on a tough-skinned area, such as the sole of the foot, soak the blister for fifteen minutes in Burow’s solution.
- Soak the blister three to four times a day.
- A day or two of this will soften the blister and make draining easier.
- Redness, red streaks, or pus in an intact or “popped” blister should be treated by a doctor.

Overview of Sunburn
- Sunburn is due to excessive exposure to the sun’s ultra-violet (UV) rays.
- The sun’s ultra-violet rays are responsible for sunburn.
- There are two types of ultra-violet rays, ultra-violet A (UVA) and ultra-violet B (UVB).
- UVB rays attack the skin’s outer layers.
- UVA are rays that attack the underlying layers.
- Sunburns, like any other burn, are classifies as first degree, second degree and third degree.

First degree Sunburn
- The symptoms of a first degree burn include pain, heat, redness and tender to the touch in the skin affected.
- These symptoms can appear from 1 to 24 hours after exposure to the sun.

Second degree Sunburn
- This includes extreme reddening, swelling, pain and even blisters can appear.
- The burn goes deeper into the skin’s layers damaging small blood vessels and elastic fibers in the skin.
- Later, there is wrinkling of the skin.
- The burn may be accompanied by chills, fever, nausea, and/or delirium.

Natural Home Treatment for Sunburn
Take measures to prevent yourself from getting sunburned:
- Avoid being outdoors between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, when the UV rays are more intense.
- Wear a hat, sunglasses that protect your eyes from UV rays, and clothing made of light colored, light weight, tightly woven material.
- Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher.
- Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas 30′ before going outside
- If you are swimming or perspiring, this is recommended.
- Make sure you buy a sunscreen that contains protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
- Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
- Eat lots of lean and high quality protein foods.
- Include raw fruits to supply the vitamins and minerals needed.
- Drink plenty of fluids to keep your body hydrated, and to replace the lost.
- To relief a sunburn pain apply over the affected area cool water compresses
- Fill a bathtub with cold water and dissolve one pound of baking soda or oatmeal in it.
- Soak in the bath for 30′ approximately, until relieved
- Wash the affected area with an antibacterial soap to prevent secondary infection.
- Do not burst any blister.
- They form a natural protection to help the skin sunburned to heal faster.
- Do not apply any creams, butter, petroleum jelly or any other greasy substance to sunburn.
- They only cause more damage by trapping the heat and can make a burn deeper.
- The sunburn will heal faster if left exposed to the air.

Immediate self-care is aimed at stopping the UV radiation.
- Get out of the sun
- Cover exposed skin
- Get out of the tanning bed
- Use SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 or higher and apply frequently when outdoors.
- For mild sunburn, cool compresses with equal parts of milk and water may suffice.
- Cold compresses with Burow’s solution may also be used, and can be bought at a drugstore. Dissolve 1 packet in 1 pint of water. Soak gauze or a soft clean cloth in it.
- Gently wring out the cloth and apply to the sunburned area for 15-20 minutes.
- Change or refresh the cloth and solution every 2-3 hours.
- Aloe Vera gel or aloe-based lotions may soothe irritated skin.
- Cool (not ice cold) baths may help.
- Avoid bath salts, oils, and perfumes because these may produce sensitivity reactions.
- Avoid scrubbing the skin or shaving the skin.
- Use soft towels to gently dry the body.
- Don’t rub.
- Use a light, fragrance-free skin moisturizer.
- Stay out of the sun while you are sunburned.
- Stay hydrated to avoid dehydration.

Medical emergencies are not pre-planned. They occur all of a sudden. There is an emergency room available in all hospitals. What can be done to handle some medical emergencies that occur all of a sudden is described below:

- Asthma
When the symptoms of asthma like wheezing, chest tightness, coughing, breath shortness worsens until he / she is unable to speak more than four words, blueness around lips and reliever medication is ineffective, person should be admitted to the emergency room in which he would be put on a nebuliser in which oxygen is directly delivered to the lungs. Oxygen mask can also be used.

- Heart Attack
Symptoms of heart attack include pain across chest, arms, jaws or neck and it does not lessen with rest, nausea, vomiting, difficulty in breathing, rapid weak and irregular pulse. Move to an emergency room and on the way to hospital chew a 160mg aspirin to stop clumping of blood platelets. In an emergency room, ECG is done and blood studies are done. Intravenous nitroglycerine reduces heart’s oxygen need and improves coronary circulation. The chance of death is halved if you reach in first hour.

- Fractures
When a fracture is suspected, pain worsens with the movement, that particular area swells, a limb is crooked. Transport to an emergency room very carefully. In the emergency room, x-ray of the limb is done and broken bone ends are treated. To relieve pain, a muscle relaxant is given. The area is immobilized with plaster cast or splint.

- Internal Bleeding
Sometimes, there is internal bleeding after an injury. Symptoms are pale and clammy skin, rapid weak pulse, shallow and rugged breathing, fainting, swelling, pain and tenderness. While you are waiting for ambulance to go to an emergency room, raise the legs and cover with blanket and do not offer an food or water. In an emergency room, the person is diagnosed and then treated.

- Diabetes
Sometimes, the blood sugar falls below 50 because of delayed and missed meals, sudden vigorous activities, irregular medications. It results in blurred vision, numbness, paleness, headaches, unconsciousness, tingling in lips and and fingers. When a person is admitted to an emergency room, the IV fluids are administered.

- Poison
Induce vomiting if poison is not in the form of kerosene, gasoline, turpentine, cleaning fluid, insect sprays. In an emergency room, urine and blood tests are done to identify the poison and specific antidotes are suggested.

- Urinary Retention
Sometimes a person has a full bladder but they could not urinate. When you are admitted to an emergency room, a catheter is inserted to allow the person to empty the bladder.

- Heat Exhaustion
It can hit you in a hot, noisy, smoke filled disco or pub resulting in loss of electrolytes. In an emergency room, patient is pumped with IV fluids to revive the blood pressure.

The use of a steam room or sauna is a health practice with numerous health benefits. Saunas and the steam rooms are the rooms designed for the treatments with the use of heated air, which is of a temperature that varies between 800 and 1000 degrees of Celsius.

Difference between a sauna and a steam room?

Sauna air is heated by hot, porous rocks that emit a long-lasting heat. Because the humidity in a sauna is low, saunas are usually made of softwoods. In a steam room, the water vapor carries the heat. The wall construction is typically acrylic, tile, marble, or other stone. Steam rooms are much cooler than saunas although they often feel warmer.

Steam Bath Benefits

A steam room is an enclosed room which is made warm and humid by use of a heater and steam.
- they have high moisture content.
- the condensed moisture relieves pressure in the sinuses and lungs, which helps to counteract conditions such as asthma and allergies.
- steam baths or rooms give us relief from muscle soreness, relief from stiff joints, immune system enhancement, lymph detoxification, blood circulation improvement and sinus congestion relief.
- people with respiratory ailments often prefer the benefits of the steam room to those of the sauna.
- steam helps in the enhancing the speed and intensity of the metabolism of our body, in turn leading to weight loss.

Sauna Benefits

A sauna is a low humidity chamber that uses hot rocks (or even infrared rays) to create a high, dry heat.
- cleaning and detoxifying your skin.
- increases blood circulation.
- improves immunity system.
- sweating in sauna helps eliminate bacteria and viruses from inside your body.
- heart pumps harder which is an aerobic workout in itself.
- the heat also helps in stimulating production of white blood cells, exactly what your body needs to fight off illnesses.
- sauna bath has been proven to help in weight loss.

NOTE : One must be careful, since the excessive exposure to the hot air may cause some severe burns. Because of that, it is very advisable to take a lot of water, both, from the inside (by drinks) and from the outside.

helps in restoring normal body function and preventing disability arising from disease, trauma or injury. Physiotherapy is based on a detailed understanding of how the body works—posture, balance and movement, knowledge of diseases, injury and the healing process.
There are different types of physiotherapy:

Contrast Baths

A contrast bath, also called hot/cold immersion therapy, is a method of treating soreness, swelling, and inflammation in a person’s joints or muscles. It increases muscle blood flow without expending energy in order to facilitate the flushing of metabolic waste.
Temperature of Hot water is between 40° – 45°C.
Temperature of cold water is 15° – 20°C.

Hot Packs

It consists of a silicate gel called bentonite. The temperature where the hot pack is immersed is between 75° to 80°C. Heat energy is used to relieve pain and induce relaxation. It should not be used if a person has lack of heat sensation, local open wounds, burns and unhealed scars.

Short Wave Diathermy

It is a high frequency alternating current. The heat energy obtained is used for treating inflammation of shoulder joint, inflammation of elbow joint, degeneration of joints of neck, degeneration of joints like knee and hip, ligament sprains in knee joint, low backache, heel pain, sinusitis.
It should not be used if the person is having fever, fluctuating blood pressure, sensitive skin, pregnant women, cardiac problem, bone TB, Cancer.

Infrared Rays

These are electromagnetic waves. Infrared heat is not ultraviolet radiation. Infrared energy travels 2-3″ deep into the body and increases blood circulation and nourishes damaged tissue. They are used to relieve pain and muscle strain. It should not be used if a person is having defective blood supply to the area, blood loss or nerve damage.

Ultra Violet Rays

These are electromagnetic waves with wavelength ranging between 3,900 and 1,849 A°. It is useful for treating general weakness, deficiency in vitamin-D, weight loss, skin disease and hair fall. It should not be used if person is suffering from cancer, high fever, sensitive skin and TB of lungs.
Side effects of light therapy for sleep phase disorders include jumpiness or jitteriness, headache, and nausea.

Therapeutic Massage

Massage treatment uses “TOUCH” to apply pressure to the body’s skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments. It helps in relieving tension, promoting blood flow, calming nerves, loosening muscle. Different modes of therapeutic massage are stroking, clapping, kneading, friction, wringing, picking up, hacking, shaking, vibration.
It is helpful in relief from pain, muscle tightness, induce sleep in insomnia, relieves tension, skin is toned, drainage of oedema or swelling, loosens secretion in the lungs.

Physiotherapy is a science that aims to improve people with movement disorders by using evidence-based, natural methods such as exercise, motivation, adapted equipment, education and advocacy.
Its primary motive is to restore normal functioning and relieving pain. The treatment focuses on the following systems:
- Spinal cord, nervous system
- Blood circulation and functioning of the heart
- Health of the muscles, bones and ligaments
- Skin care, healing of wounds
- Vestibular system (inner ear) as it is important for restoring balance

Types of Physiotherapy

- Cryotherapy
It involves the application of ice. The temperature of the skin over the ailment is reduced to 10°C during the treatment. it is useful in muscle spasm, spasticity, pain, bed sores. It should not be used if a person has psychological fear of ice, any kind of cardiac problems, nerve injuries and lack of sensation. It can be applied through ice towel, ice packs, immersion, ice cube massage.

- L A S E R (Light Amplification Stimulated Emission of Radiation) THERAPY
Treatment is done in two ways either direct contact (directly over the skin) or distance contact (5cm away from the skin). It is useful in wounds, pressure ulcers, diabetic ulcers, surgical wounds. It should not be used with epileptic persons/persons with recurrent fits, persons with cardiac problems and persons using artificial pacemakers.

- Heat
Heat can be used to heal the muscles and softer tissues. Heating is very helpful when joints have become stiff because of osteoarthritis and also to help in relaxing the muscles before exercises. It helps in blood circulation. It is advisable to wait for about 2 days before making use of heat.

- Hydrotherapy
Exercising in water or using water for healing softer tissues form hydrotherapy because water helps in the flow of blood, it stores as well as carry heat, swimming takes the pressure off a paining joint.

- Electrical Stimulation
The use of electrical current for treatment of joint and muscle disorder is also becoming increasingly popular. It is used for mending broken bones and healing wounds. It is used at very low levels of current to help in decreasing the pain as it produces some pain killers. After a heart stroke, electrical stimulation is made use of to regulate the functioning of the muscles near the shoulder. It is used in maintaining the strength of the muscles of legs in a person suffering from arthritis. It helps in bringing the muscles at the front of the thigh after the conclusion of a knee surgery.

Xerosis, also called dry skin is rough, cracking, scaly skin. It is a condition of normal hardening of aging tissue. Dry skin mostly occurs during the winter months, when heating systems dry the air. In this process, healthy cells of skin are shrivel and this leads to the formation of wrinkles and fine lines. It is most common on the legs, but often affecting the entire skin surface. Severe xerosis is common in the elderly, and can cause eczema.

Causes of Xerosis

- Central heating of home and other buildings is very drying to the skin.
- Less of essential oil in the outermost layer of epidermis due to which the water content fail to stick to the skin.
- Low humidity and cold temperatures make winter xerosis.
- Genetic defect in skin barrier function.
- Anemia, HIV, Liver and biliary disease, Diabetes mellitus, Medications
- Use of harsh soaps.
- Vitamin A deficiency
- Hormones abnormality from the thyroid gland may lead to xerosis.
- Weight loss.
- Increasing age
- Alcohol and caffeine can visibly dry your skin.

Symptoms of Xerosis

- Tightness of the skin after bathing.
- Wrinkles and crack on the skin.
- Shrunken-ed and dehydrated skin.
- Itching and redness of the skin.
- Most of the symptoms are worst in winter due to low humidity.
- Develop fluid-filled sores that can ooze fluid or crust over.

Self Care for Xerosis

- Keep the skin lubricated.
- Soap should not be used as it irritates and dries the skin.
- Moisturize oils or lotions, using mild soaps when bathing, and avoiding rubbing the skin dry after a shower or bath. Instead, pat gently with a towel.
- Maintaining a balanced diet, exercising, and drinking plenty of water contribute to healthy skin.
- Emollients are creams that can be applied to the affected area.
- Use lukewarm water in winters, not hot water for bathing.
- Alpha hydroxyacid lotions work very well for treating and preventing dry skin.
- When you have finished swimming, rinse off the chlorine with cool to warm water.

A sauna is an enclosed room which can be heated with the use of an electric heater, infrared heater, or wood stove. The elevated temperature in the room can be made more intense with the use of steam, or left dry, depending on the taste of the sauna bathers.

- During a 10-20 minute sauna session, your heart rate increases by 50-75%. This provides the same metabolic result as physical exercise. There is a nominal effect on blood pressure.
- Blood vessels become more flexible and there is increased circulation to the extremities.
- One of the main health benefits to owning a sauna is that using it rids your body of unwanted materials and helps to improve overall circulation.
- Another health benefit to owning a sauna is that it can help prevent heart disease.
- Steambaths and saunas induce sweating to provide a comprehensive cleansing of the skin and sweat glands.
- When taking a sauna, skin temperature rises to 40°C (104°F) and internal body temperature rises to about 38°C (100.4°F). Exposure to the high heat creates an artificial fever state. Fever stimulates the immune system resulting in increased production of disease fighting white blood cells, antibodies and interferon.
- Relief from the pain and stiffness of arthritis.
- Steam is an excellent treatment for respiratory problems, such as; chest congestion, bronchitis, laryngitis and sinusitis.
- Revives tired and strained muscles after physical exertion.
- The cleansing effect of profuse perspiration helps provide healthy skin and a clear complexion.
- Burns calories. About 600 calories burned in 30 minutes while sitting in a sauna.

Precautions before using sauna

- Avoid alcohol and medications that may impair sweating and produce overheating before and after your sauna.
- Stay in no more than 15–20 minutes.
- Cool down gradually afterward.
- Drink two to four glasses of cool water after each sauna.
- Don’t take a sauna when you are ill, and if you feel unwell during your sauna, head for the door.
Caution
Pregnant women, heart patient with low or high blood pressure condition or suffering from any disease which has negative effect of sauna bath should first consult a physician regarding their physical condition and the length of period they can take sauna bath.

NOTE : Using a sauna for weight loss is not a sole method. Used in conjunction with eating correctly and getting regular exercise a sauna can help a person to lose weight. It is also a great way to relax after a stressful way, which will also help keep the body healthy. A healthy body losses weight much better than one that is not healthy.
