Dandelions are also known as Taraxacum Officinale. The meaning of the name is that it is the Official Remedy for Disorders. Dandelion is commonly known as a flower which is used in decorations but its medicinal values and health benefits are unknown. Although there are many varieties of dandelion present but the one which is most commonly used is the Taraxacum Officinale. Dandelions originate from Greece and since ancient times it is used as a very useful herb for curing many purposes. Dandelions contain components like beta carotene a great source of Vitamin A, iron, calcium, potassium, fiber, magnesium, Vitamin B, phosphorus, riboflavin, thiamine and proteins.

When the kidney is not able to function properly, it is called acute renal or kidney failure or ARF. In acute renal failure, the kidney can stop functioning for few hours, days, weeks. The main function of kidneys is to filter and maintain electrolyte balance. When kidneys do not perform properly, the waste products are accumulated and the balance gets disturbed. Kidneys are responsible to excrete compounds with water to make urine. Kidneys help in regulating the blood pressure.

Acute renal failure is the result of body experiencing untoward like blood loss during surgery, injury or medicine overdose.
Chronic renal failure is due to long illness which affect the kidneys in long run.

CAUSES OF ACUTE KIDNEY OR RENAL FAILURE
Acute renal failure occurs when the kidney fails to push out these wastes or the everyday toxins out of the body in the form of urine.
It is caused by low blood, excess waste and enlargement pf prostrate.
- Some kidney disease.
- If the blood flow is decreased because of some kind of injury, dehydration, surgery, some illness.
- Disorder that can caused clotting in kidneys.
- Any kind of infection or injuries to kidneys.
- Any disorder of urinal tract.
- Pregnancy disorders.
- Disruption of blood flow to kidneys because of heart or liver failure, blockage of blood vessel.

SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE KIDNEY OR RENAL FAILURE
- Problem in urination.
- Tiredness.
- Weakness.
- Nausea
- Swelling in legs and feet.
- Back pain.
- Confused state of mind.
- Shortness of breath.
- Affect oxygen metabolism causing organ failure.
- Potassium levels increase because of the incapability to excrete potassium.
- Urea levels increase in blood.
- Rapid breathing.

DIAGNOSIS OF ACUTE RENAL OR KIDNEY FAILURE
- Blood tests like BUN, creatinine, and GFR are done to measure the buildup of waste products in the blood.
- Screening is done to measure electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and calcium.
- Kidney or abdominal ultrasound.
- Abdominal X-rays, abdominal CT scan, or abdominal MRI.

TREATMENT OF ACUTE RENAL OR KIDNEY FAILURE
- Prevent fluid and toxins to build up in the body.
- Follow the diet given by the doctor.
- Diet should be high in carbohydrates and low in protein, salt, and potassium.
- Dialysis may be needed if potassium levels increase.

Scientifically known as Eugenia aromatica, Clove is the dried bud of a flower of an evergreen tree. It grows mainly in the warmer climates. Cloves are known for their flavor, aroma and medicinal value probably one of the reasons why it finds a place in innumerable cuisines.
Clove oil is one of the most common form that is used apart from the dried buds that are popularly used as a spice. Cloves are rich in their nutritional value. The most important constituents being manganese, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, sodium, potassium and vitamin A, it also contains vitamin C and K. Apart from these, cloves are also known to have dietary fibers. Because of such a rich content of vitamins and minerals there are many health benefits of cloves. Some of the benefits are discussed below.

Antimicrobial
Clove oil has a chemical compound called Eugenol. This chemical compound is found to be anti fungal and anti bacterial in nature. Apart from the cost effectiveness, being a natural fungicide it does not have the usual side effects that are common with synthetic drugs or fungicides.

Anesthetic
Cloves have been used since ages as a household remedy for toothache. Eugenol and beta caryophyllene are two major components of clove oil, these two components are known for their analgesic property because of which it is popularly used in dentistry as a local anesthetic.
Eugenol is known not only for its anesthetic property but it is also known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties because of which it is popularly used the drugs and dental fillings.

Oral health
The anti bacterial property of clove helps in maintaining oral health. It can be taken directly or diluted in water and gargled to remove bad breath or treat sore gums or mouth ulcers.

Diabetes
Recent studies have also indicated that a daily intake of cloves can actually increase the insulin activity by almost 3 times thus maintaining blood sugar levels. Making cloves a part of the daily diet can help in delaying the onset of diabetes.

Aphrodisiac
Cloves have been used since ages as an aphrodisiac. It is now proven through research that cloves do indeed enhance the sexual behavior in males. Research shows that cloves can be used for the treatment of premature ejaculation as well.

Mosquito repellent
Clove oil can be used as a mosquito repellent. Being very strong, clove oil if used on the skin should be used in dilution as it may lead to burning sensation. As a mosquito repellant it stays active for about 4 to 5 hours.

Respiratory health
Cloves have been found to possess the potential to prevent lung cancer. Further research is being conducted to support this discovery. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties and cooling effect clove is popularly used in the treatment of coughs and cold. Gargling or chewing clove can help ease sore throat. Clove is also used in other respiratory disorders like bronchitis, tuberculosis, asthma and sinusitis.

Blood circulation
Another health benefit of clove is that it helps in increasing blood circulation, which allows proper flow of nutrients and oxygen which, in turn, helps in the increase of body metabolism. Eugenol the extract from clove oil is also found to inhibit clotting of blood which helps in maintaining cardiovascular health.

This spice though originally used by the Indians and the Chinese has spread throughout the world because of the pleasant aroma and flavor that it can impart to the food. It not only finds a place in many cuisines of the world but because of all the health benefits of clove it is now one of the most valued spices.

Potassium is one of the most important minerals, essential for the life of every cell. It is one of the most widely distributed of all the tissue minerals. Principally, potassium is found in intracellular fluid. A small amount of potassium in extracellular fluid is necessary for normal muscular activity.
- Potassium is a bluish-white metallic element.
- Potassium is highly reactive and is not found free in nature.
- Potassium plays an important role as a catalyst in energy production.
- Potassium plays an important role in the synthesis of glycogen and protein.
- Potassium absorption occurs mainly in small intestine.

Increased amounts of potassium is found in urine whenever the tissues are losing potassium. It is may be because of the breakdown of cellular proteins. Any condition that gives rise to acidosis is liable to cause cellular depletion of potassium. Patients who are given diuretics to increase the output of sodium and water in the urine, an important side effect is an increase in potassium excretion.
In a healthy person, the feces contain very small amounts of potassium. The digestive juices contain large amounts but this is normally reabsorbed in the gut.

FUNCTIONS OF POTASSIUM IN THE BODY

- Potassium is an alkalizing agent.
- Potassium maintains a proper acid-alkaline balance in the blood and tissues.
- Potassium prevents hyper-acidity.
- Potassium is essential for muscle contraction and therefore it is important for the proper functioning of the heart.
- Potassium promotes the secretion of hormones and helps the kidneys in detoxification of blood.
- Potassium prevents female hormonal disorders by stimulating the hormone production.
- Potassium helps in proper functioning of the nervous system.
- Potassium helps to overcome fatigue.
- Potassium also assists in reducing blood pressure.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS OF POTASSIUM

- Deficiency may occur during gastro-intestinal disturbances accompanied by severe vomiting and diarrhea.
- Deficiency may occur during diabetic acidosis.
- Deficiency may occur during potassium-losing nephritis.
- Deficiency may occur during steroid therapy and that of similar drugs.
- Deficiency may occur during mental and physical stress.
- Deficiency of potassium causes body tiredness, palpitations of heart, cloudiness of mind, nervous shaking and excessive perspiration of hands and feet, sensitivity of the nerves to cold. It may also lead to slow healing of ulcers and fractures.

FOOD SOURCES RICH IN POTASSIUM

- Pulses such as green gram, cow peas, red gram, black gram.
- Vegetables like lotus stems, sword beans.
- Other good sources are legumes, leafy vegetables, and fruits such as bael, sweet limes, peaches, and apricots.
- Excessive use of alcohol, coffee, sugar, and diuretics can lead to depletion of potassium.

HEALING PROPERTIES OF POTASSIUM

Potassium deficiency should be corrected by increased dietary intake or supplementation with potassium salts.
- Low Blood Sugar: The use of potassium has been found beneficial in the treatment of low blood sugar. An intake of sugar and potassium chloride brings an immediate relief.
- Muscle Abnormalities: The symptoms of muscle abnormalities when 10g of potassium chloride is given. Studies show that severe potassium deficiency results in muscles becoming weak, soft or partially paralyzed.
- Sciatica: Increasing potassium intake can help to alleviate discomfort from leg cramps and sciatica. This is due to the role of potassium in nerve function.

Creamy, rich, and sweet, bananas are a favorite food for everyone from infants to elders. Bananas contains three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fibre, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. There are different types of bananas available like : Red bananas, Apple bananas, Fruit bananas, Baby bananas, Baking bananas. Fresh, ripe bananas are a very good source of fruit sugars and can give a quick energy boost.

- Bananas contain potassium which is an essential ingredient to keep your heart and nervous system in good shape. It helps in normal rhythmic pumping of the heart, digestion, muscular movements, etc.
- Bananas boost our memory because of their high potassium content.
- A normal intake of potassium suppresses calcium excretion in the urine and minimizes the risk of kidney stones.
- Bananas are the first solid food that is given to infants.
- Bananas are one of the highest sources of naturally available vitamin B6. It helps the body to make hemoglobin. Vitamin B6 is also essential for antibody production and to maintain a healthy immune response.
- Bananas are good source of dietary fiber. Fiber improves smooth bowel movements and improves constipation.
- To cure hangover is to make a banana milkshake , sweetened with honey.
- Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body if you suffer from heart-burn.
- This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it the perfect food for helping to beat blood pressure.

Is banana good for diabetes ?

Banana when eaten in recommended amounts is good for a person with diabetes. As bananas are loaded with simple carbohydrates they tend to increase your blood sugar levels in a very short period of time. Thus the serving size of banana is important and should be lower than any other fruit low in carbohydrates like a pear or an apple.
If you eat bananas and other fruits high in carbohydrates like mango, custard apple, sapota, jackfruit and grapes in moderation or in the recommended allowance, keeping in mind your carbohydrate intake per meal, then they are definitely good for a person with diabetes.

Potassium is one of the main electrolytes that the body requires for proper functioning of the nervous system and muscles, especially the heart and kidneys. Tests have indicated that if potassium level is on higher side, low potassium food is prescribed. Potassium is found in nearly all foods so extra care has to be taken. A diet providing less than 1,500mg of potassium a day is sufficient.
The effects of elevated potassium levels are related to the health of your heart. When potassium stays in your blood because your kidneys aren’t filtering it out, you may experience weakness accompanied by an irregular heartbeat.

Side Effects of High Potassium

- Nausea, fatigue, muscle weakness or tingling in the extremities and tongue.
- It can cause atherosclerosis, blood pressure problems, heart arrhythmias, and problems with the kidneys that worsen, the longer the condition persists.

Causes of High Potassium

- Acute or chronic kidney failure.
- Problems with the urinary tract.
- Glomerulonephritis.
- Lupus nephritis.
- Diabetes.
- Addison’s disease.
- Tissue trauma from surgery, burns, or other traumatic injury.

Dietary Considerations

- Fruits, vegetables, pulses, nuts, meat and milk are especially high in potassium. So, limit the intake accordingly.
- Include 1-2 servings of low-potassium fruit per day which includes 1 orange/peach/pear/kiwi or a handful of raspberries/strawberries/cherries or a large slice of watermelon everyday.
- Avoid fruits such as banana, apricots, coconut, melon, mango, orange juice, papaya, pomegranate, dates, figs, prunes and raisins.
- Completely avoid vegetables like beans, peas, baked potatoes/fries, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, puree and yam.
- Soya beans, soya milk or tofu are totally avoidable.
- One to two servings of low potassium meat and dairy food choices per day.
- Avoid salt substitutes or low sodium salts as these are high in potassium salts.
- Chocolates, nuts, molasses and jaggery are to be completely avoided.
- Leaching vegetables like potatoes removes much of the calcium and potassium. Peel the potato and cut into small pieces. Cover completely with water and keep in refrigerator for at least four hours. Drain well and cook in fresh water.

Date is the name of the fruit of the Date Palm, which is believed to have originated somewhere in the desert oases of northern Africa and, perhaps, southwest Asia.
A serving of power-packed dates contains 31 grams of carbohydrates, making them a powerhouse of energy. Carbohydrates include 3 grams of dietary fiber and 29 grams of naturally occurring sugars such as fructose, glucose and sucrose to provide quick energy and are readily used by the body. Dates are a perfect energy boosting snack.
Dates are one of the best natural sources of potassium. Dates also contain a variety of B-complex vitamins – thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6 and pantothenic acid.

Health Benefits of Dates :
- Great energy booster.
- Dates get digested very quickly, that’s why they can be used for quick energy and repairing wastes.
- Dates are also excellent remedy for alcoholic intoxication.
- The date is a laxative food. It is highly beneficial in the treatment of constipation as the roughage provided by it stimulates sluggish bowels.
- Dates are an effective remedy for weak heart. Dates soaked overnight in water and crushed in the same water in the morning after removing the seeds should be taken at least twice a week in this condition. It will strengthen the heart.
- Dates are Rich in Potassium and Low in Sodium.
- Researches have revealed that dates are effective in preventing abdominal cancer.
- Dates have a tonic effect and thus, hold value as medicines.

However, as a precaution, dates require great care for selection. The sticky surface of the date attracts dust and impurities of the air to settle there. It is, therefore, advisable to purchase the best varieties in good packing condition and to wash them thoroughly before use.
- When you select dates, always make sure they are evenly colored and fleshy. A dry, withered-looking date has neither any taste nor nutritional benefits.
- Ensure there are no sugar formations on the exterior part of a date. This usually happens around a dry date fruit and is absolutely not suitable to eat.
