During pregnancy, you may feel the need to urinate frequently, sometimes even when the bladder is nearly empty. During later pregnancy, many women find the need to urinate more frequently. Many pregnant women leak some urine when coughing, laughing, sneezing or exercising. During pregnancy it is normal to have to go to the bathroom often.
Frequent urination is one of the most common symptoms of pregnancy that women experience. In fact, some women experience frequent urination and not even know they are pregnant yet. There are a couple of reasons for frequent urination during pregnancy.
Urinating often occurs during early pregnancy as soon as 6-7 weeks due to increased blood flow during pregnancy. Excess blood leads to extra fluid being processed through the kidneys to the bladder.

Causes:
The need to go to the bathroom will change throughout the stages of pregnancy. Sometimes you may feel the need to urinate more frequently. Other times, you feel like you’re back to normal.

- In the first weeks of pregnancy, your body produces a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which can make you urinate more frequently.
- Your body contains more fluid during pregnancy.
- Your kidneys work harder throughout pregnancy to remove waste products from your body.
- As the uterus grows and rises higher during the second trimester, some women find that they have to urinate as often as before.
- Towards the end of pregnancy, the baby moves down to prepare for childbirth. This increases the pressure on the bladder, causing more frequent urination.
- The added pressure may wake you up several times at night to urinate.
- You can also force some urine to leak out, particularly if the muscles around the urethra are not very strong.

For the first days after birth, you may urinate more often as your body gets rid of excess fluid from the pregnancy. But after a few days, your need to urinate should return to what it was before pregnancy.

Treatment:
Here are some tips for dealing with frequent urination or loss during pregnancy:

Avoid drinks with caffeine.
- Caffeine can make you urinate more frequently.
- Avoid drinks like coffee, tea, colas and other caffeinated beverages that lead to the problem.

Do the Kegel exercises.
- These simple exercises can help stop urine leakage by strengthening the muscles that keep the urethra (the tube through which urine leaves the body) closed. They can even help prepare these muscles for labor and delivery.
- Do these exercises by squeezing the muscles you use to stop urine flow and hold for 10 seconds.
- Do this 10-20 times in a row at least three times a day.

Avoid drinking fluids before bedtime.
- Cut down on night visits to the bathroom, fluid intake should be earlier in the day.
- Reduce the amount you drink in the early evening and night.
- However, be sure to drink adequate amounts of water and juice during the day to ensure that there are robbing your body of vital fluids.

Completely empty the bladder.
- To help prevent leaks, make sure your bladder does not overfill.
- Try not to “hold it” when you feel the need to urinate. This may mean more trips to the bathroom.
- When you urinate, try to lean forward a bit in order to completely empty the bladder. Always empty your bladder before exercising.

Use a sanitary pad or panty shield.
- A pad or panty shield can take unexpected leakage caused by coughing or sneezing.

Bleeding during all stages of pregnancy can be dangerous; you should call your healthcare provider if there are any signs of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding is any blood from the vagina (the canal leading from the uterus to the external genitalia). This usually refers to abnormal bleeding not associated with a regular menstrual period. Some basic things to know about bleeding are:

- If you are bleeding, you should always use a towel or panty liner so you can control how much you are bleeding and the type of bleeding you are experiencing.
- Never use a tampon or introduce anything else in the area of the vagina as a douche or sexual intercourse if you are experiencing bleeding.
- If you are also experiencing any of the other symptoms mentioned below in connection with a possible complication, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.

The time period of the bleeding can be:
- The first trimester bleeding is vaginal bleeding during the first 3 months of pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding can vary from light spotting to severe bleeding with clots. Vaginal bleeding is a common problem in early pregnancy, complicating 20-30% of all pregnancies.
- Any vaginal bleeding during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy (last 6 months of a 9-month pregnancy) is abnormal.
- Bleeding from the vagina after 28 weeks of pregnancy is a true emergency. Bleeding can range from very mild to very quickly and may or may not be accompanied by abdominal pain. Haemorrhage (another word for bleeding) is the most common cause of maternal death in the United States. It complicates 4% of all pregnancies.

Causes:
Many women have a certain amount of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. Some studies show that up to 30% of pregnant women experience some degree of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy is more common in twins and other multiple pregnancies than singleton pregnancies.

Sometimes women experience very little amount of bleeding in the first two weeks of pregnancy, usually around the time of the expected menstrual period. This light bleeding is sometimes referred to as “implantation bleeding.” Doctors do not know for sure what causes this bleeding, but can occur as a result of a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterine wall.

The amount of bleeding, the stage of pregnancy, and any associated symptoms can help determine the cause of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy. While vaginal bleeding during pregnancy does not mean a problem with the pregnancy, women who experience bleeding during pregnancy should always be evaluated by a physician.

Treatment:
Drugs for treatment of irregular vaginal bleeding depend on the cause. Examples are described below:
- If the cause of bleeding is the lack of ovulation (anovulation), doctors may prescribe either progesterone to be taken at regular intervals, or an oral contraceptive containing progesterone for proper hormone balance. This treatment dramatically decreases the risk of uterine cancer in women who do not ovulate.

- If the cause of irregular vaginal bleeding is a precancerous change in the lining of the uterus, progesterone drugs can be prescribed to reduce the accumulation of pre-cancerous tissue lining the uterus in an attempt to avoid surgery.

- When a woman has not menstruated for less than six months, the cause may be the menopausal transition. During this transition, a woman is sometimes offered an oral contraceptive to establish a more regular bleeding pattern to provide complete contraception until menopause, and to relieve hot flashes.

- If the cause of irregular vaginal bleeding is benign polyps or other tumors, they are sometimes removed surgically to control bleeding, and can not be treated with medication.

- If the cause of bleeding is infection, antibiotics are necessary. Bleeding during pregnancy requires urgent evaluation by an obstetrician. Endometriosis can be treated with medication and / or surgery.

- Sometimes, the cause of excessive bleeding is not evident after the completion of the test (dysfunctional uterine bleeding). In these cases, oral contraceptives may improve cycle control and reduce bleeding.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein of the leg, calf or pelvis. During pregnancy, swelling and discomfort in both legs is common and does not always mean there is a problem. The blood in the veins is in constant formation of tiny clots that usually breaks down in the body. If the balance of clot formation and resolution changes, significant clotting can occur. A thrombus may form if one or a combination of the following situations exists.

Causes of Deep Vein Thrombosis

Immobility
- Prolonged sitting and travel such as long airplane flights, car or train.
- Hospitalization.
- Surgery.
- Trauma in the leg with or without surgery or casting.
- Pregnancy, including 6-8 weeks after birth.
- Obesity.

Hypercoagulability
- Smoking
- Genetic predisposition
- Polycythemia (increased number of red blood cells)
- Cancer

Trauma to the vein
- Fracture of the leg
- Leg contusion
- Complication of an invasive procedure, the vein

Other causes include:
- The damage occurs to the inner lining of a vein. This damage can result from injuries caused by physical, chemical or biological factors. Such factors include surgery, serious injury, inflammation and immune response.
- Blood flow is sluggish or slow. Lack of movement can cause slow or sluggish blood flow. This can occur after surgery, if you are sick and in bed for a long time, or if you are travelling for a long time.
- Your blood is thicker or more likely to clot than normal. Certain hereditary conditions (such as factor V Leiden) increase the tendency for blood to clot. This is also true for treatment with hormone therapy or birth control pills.

Treatment for Deep Vein Thrombosis

As soon as the doctor suspects a venous thrombosis, you are advised to start treatment with an injection of heparin (an anticoagulant) to “thin the blood.” There are different types of heparin. The most commonly used in pregnancy is “low molecular weight heparin (LMWH).

Superficial Thrombophlebitis:
The treatment of superficial blood clot is symptomatic:
- Hot towels
- Leg compression and
- An anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen.

Deep venous Thromboses
Treatment of DVT above the knee is anticoagulation, unless there is a contraindication.Contraindications include recent major surgery (from anticoagulation would be thin all the blood in the body, not just in the leg, leading to serious bleeding problems), or abnormal reactions when previously exposed to anticoagulant medications.

Anticoagulation prevents further growth of blood clotting and prevents the formation of a clot that can travel to the lungs. Anticoagulation is a two-step process. Warfarin is the drug of choice for anticoagulation. It should be started immediately, but unfortunately it may take a week or more for blood to get properly diluted. Therefore, the molecular weight heparin is administered at the same time. It thins the blood through a different mechanism and is used as bridge therapy until the warfarin has reached the therapeutic level. Enoxaparin injections can be given on an outpatient basis.

Surgery
Surgery is a rare option in the treatment of deep vein thrombosis large leg in patients who can not take blood thinners or who have recurrent clots while on anticoagulant medications. Surgery is often accompanied by placement of a vena cava (IVC) filter to prevent future clots embolization to the lung.

Cerulea dolens Phlegmasia describes a situation in which a blood clot in the iliac vein of the pelvis and the femoral vein in the leg, blocking almost all of the blood return and jeopardizing the blood supply to the leg. In this case surgery may be considered to remove the clot, but the patient also required anticoagulant medications.

Dizziness or feeling faint is a normal symptom during pregnancy. It is more common in the first quarter, but may also be common during the whole pregnancy. During this time, the cardiovascular system will undergo some dramatic changes:
- The heart rate increases.
- The heart pumps more blood per minute and the amount of blood in the body expands by an average of 40-45%.
- The capacity of the circulatory system also increases as blood flows to the enlarged uterus and placenta.
Pregnancy is a time of change and body changes make you more apt to feel dizzy or light headed.

Causes:
The main reason of dizziness during pregnancy due to increased hormones that cause blood vessels to relax and widen. This helps to increase the blood flow to the baby, but delays the return of blood in the veins. This makes the blood pressure to be lower than usual, which can reduce blood flow to the brain, temporarily causing dizziness.
Early in pregnancy, dizziness is probably due to the fact that the body still is not producing enough blood to fill the rapidly expanding circulatory system.

Dizziness is also caused by low blood sugar that may occur when the body adapts to changes in their metabolism. Women who are anemic or who have varicose veins may be more susceptible to motion sickness than others.

During the second trimester, dizziness may be caused by the growing uterus puts pressure on blood vessels. Reduced blood flow to the brain, sometimes turn the head. You may feel dizzy if the blood sugar decreases or becomes dehydrated.

Dizziness can also occur later in pregnancy if you lie on the back so that the baby’s weight to press into the vena cava. Another possible reason you feel dizzy during pregnancy is that you are spending too much time in a warm room or stuffy nose, especially if you are wearing clothes too tight or hot. Remember, the body is a furnace to make babies, which generates a lot of their own heat right now.

Treatment:
There are several things can be done to reduce the amount of drowsiness you experience. You can leave a sickness on his way to bed as soon as you start to feel lightheaded. Elevate the feet to increase blood flow to the brain. Second best: Sit and bend forward as you can, put the head between the knees, if possible. If there is no place to lie down or sit, kneel on one knee and leaning forward as if tied to his shoe until the spell passes.

Here are some helpful suggestions to reduce dizziness during pregnancy:

- Avoid standing for long periods. If you are standing, be sure to keep the feet moving to help increase circulation.
- Stand up slowly, either sitting or lying down (This is very important when you are out of the bathtub).
- Eat regularly. Avoid long periods between meals, it is best to eat during the day.
- Avoid hot baths or showers.
- Avoid lying on the back once you get to half of its second quarter.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing to avoid restricting circulation.

Sometimes the dizziness can be a symptom of shock after severe blood loss. If you feel faint, dizzy or faint, have any vaginal bleeding, and/or abdominal pain; contact the midwife, doctor or maternity unit – which is faster – immediately.
Health care provider must be immediately consulted if dizziness is accompanied by vaginal bleeding and/or pain in abdomen. This could be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, a low-lying placenta, or placental abruption.

Now that you’re pregnant, you may have noticed that the gums are bothering more than usual. If the gums are sore or tender, or gums are bleeding when brushing or flossing, you may have a condition called pregnancy gingivitis. Pregnancy gingivitis is a common occurrence during pregnancy, however, if left untreated can lead to complications. If you notice any symptoms of pregnancy gingivitis, it is important to visit the dentist for proper treatment.

Swollen, red gums, painful bleeding when brushing or flossing are a sign of pregnancy gingivitis. The inflammation is caused by higher progesterone levels that make the gums more susceptible to plaque bacteria and the increased blood supply in the mouth.

You can also develop a benign nodule in the gums that bleed when you brush the teeth. This type of nodule is called pregnancy tumour or pyogenic granuloma. Tumours of pregnancy can actually appear anywhere in the body during pregnancy, but most often they appear in the mouth.

A pregnancy tumour can grow up to three quarters of an inch in size and is more likely to occur in an area where you have gingivitis. It usually disappears after having the baby, but if not, you will need to have it removed. If it causes discomfort, it interferes with chewing or brushing, or begins to bleed excessively; you can have it removed during pregnancy.

Causes:
There are several causes of gum disease during pregnancy. One is the increase in blood flow. During pregnancy, blood flow actually increases between 30% and 50%. This is to ensure that the baby is always getting the right nutrients to grow and develop. Unfortunately, this increased blood flow can cause the gums to swell and become very sensitive. It can even cause the gums to bleed, leaving them at greater risk for gingivitis.

The increase in hormones may also play a role in the development of pregnancy gingivitis. These high levels of the hormones leave the gums and teeth more sensitive to the bacteria that hide in the plate. This is one reason why gingivitis is so common in pregnancy.

Morning sickness can also play a small role in contributing to pregnancy gingivitis. Many women find they can no longer stand the smell or taste of the toothpaste, making it difficult to maintain good oral hygiene. Increased vomiting during pregnancy can also take its toll on the gums. Vomit contains stomach acid that can eat away the gums and teeth, making the mouth are very sensitive.

Treatment:
There is no cure for gum disease, although the damage can sometimes be reversed or stopped. All pregnant women should receive at least two thorough cleanings during pregnancy. This should help reduce your chances of developing periodontal disease or gingivitis of pregnancy.

If you already have gingivitis, treating gum disease is better to have a thorough cleaning at your dentist’s office. Your dentist will scale your teeth using a variety of instruments. This will remove excess plaque from teeth and around the gum line. Severe gingivitis may also require root planning, a process during which the roots of the teeth are cleaned the plate completely.

Prevention:
As always, the best treatment for gingivitis is prevention. Maintaining good oral hygiene routine will ensure that your gums and teeth healthy for a long time to come. Try following these tips:
- Brush twice a day for at least five minutes.
- Use a soft bristle brush – this will prevent irritating your gums.
- Flossing once a day or use an antibacterial mouthwash to get rid of plaque between teeth.
- Avoid eating large amounts of refined sugar – this will reduce the plaque and tartar .
- Visit your dentist regularly.

Constipation is a common problem during pregnancy. Nearly half of pregnant women suffer from constipation at some point.
One reason of constipation is an increase in the hormone progesterone, which relaxes smooth muscles throughout the body including the digestive tract. This means that food passes through the intestines more slowly. And the problem may be compounded later in pregnancy by the pressure of growing uterus on the rectum. Iron supplements, especially in high doses can worsen constipation.

Causes:
One of the most common reasons why you may feel constipated is because during pregnancy, the body retains too much water. Even water from the intestines is absorbed by the body. Therefore, there is enough water to soften the stool, causing constipation.
The second reason behind constipation is the loss of appetite, especially in the early months of pregnancy due to nausea and morning sickness.
In the first quarter it is caused by progesterone which decreases the intestinal activity. In late pregnancy the pressure of the uterus on the intestines and rectum makes the system slow.
- Iron supplement you need to treat anaemia has an astringent effect.
- Stress contributes to constipation.
- Being more susceptible to constipation is also a reason.

Treatment:
- Eat foods rich in fiber like whole grain cereals and breads, rice, beans and fruits and vegetables every day. The addition of a couple of tablespoons of unprocessed wheat bran (available at health food stores) to the cereal in the morning and after that a glass of water may help. It may take a couple of days before you notice the difference. Fruits help in having smooth motions. Having papayas in small quantities and bananas also helps.
- Drink plenty of water – at least six to eight glasses a day. A glass of fruit juice every day, especially prune juice, may also be useful. Some people find that drinking a hot liquid right after waking up helps get things moving. Drink as much water as you want. A good supplement can be tea, some coffee or fruit juice.
To ensure that the bowel function as well as possible, it is necessary to keep the stool soft.
- Exercise gently which stimulates the bowel movement leading to better digestion.
During pregnancy, walking or swimming for 20 to 30 minutes three times a week will help digestion. But also improve overall wellness and fitness.
- The intestines are more likely to be active after a meal. Listen to the body. Be sure to go when you feel the need. Include dry powdered ginger in your diet. This helps to relieve constipation. You can also choose flax seeds or flax seed (SAN) in your diet to relieve constipation.
- If the prenatal multivitamin contains a large dose of iron (and who is not anemic), ask the doctor about switching to a supplement with less iron.
- If the above measures do not help, talk to the doctor about taking a fibre supplement or over the counter stool softener.
- Drugs that are safe and can be used to treat constipation in pregnancy can be used.

Be sure to consult your doctor before taking any counter remedies or herbal preparations. Laxative pills and mineral oils are not recommended for the treatment of constipation during pregnancy.

It is common to have headaches during pregnancy, especially in the first quarter and if you have always been susceptible to them, pregnancy can worsen the problem. Headaches during pregnancy are even more painful because their treatment options are more limited. Some women who regularly suffer from chronic headaches, such as migraines, may have fewer episodes of them. Other women who rarely experience any headaches can have them all of a sudden.. And others, who are usually victims of pre-pregnancy, chronic headaches, can have even more.

Causes:
Many women experience headaches during pregnancy, especially in the first and third trimesters. The hormonal changes that affect estrogen levels, along with an increase in blood volume and circulation are the most likely causes.
Headaches during pregnancy are probably caused by hormones and changes in how blood circulates. If you have given to caffeine, it can also make the head pounds. Other possible reasons include fatigue, nasal congestion, high blood pressure, stress and hunger. Headaches can also be caused by excessive sun exposure and dehydration.
Migraines are different. Some women who experience migraines often find they have fewer problems with them during pregnancy. Others find that these painful episodes becoming more frequent and intense when they are pregnant.

Causes of more frequent headaches during pregnancy include:
- Stress, Fatigue
- Low blood sugar
- Dehydration
- Sleep disorders
- Sinus congestion
- Removal of caffeine

Treatment:
Most headache medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen are not recommended for pregnant women. Paracetamol, however, is considered safe for occasional use.
There are few things that can also be tried to cure the headache:

- A cold towel
Apply a warm compress around the eyes and nose for sinus headaches and a cold compress on the base of the neck for tension headaches.
- Treat the cold
Cod and stuffy nose can give you a headache. Try to ease the pain with a steam inhalation with one or two drops of peppermint oil added.
- Beat the heat
Sun exposure, use an umbrella or dupatta to cover the head andd sunglasses to protect the eyes from glare. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated too.
- Eat little and often
Blood sugar is a common cause of headache. Try eating small, frequent meals. If you are moving, keep some snacks (cookies, fruit, and whole wheat crackers) in the bag.
- Get a massage
Treat yourself and o for a professional massage and shampoo. Massage works especially well for tension headaches, which are based in the muscles of the neck, shoulders and back. If using essential oils, tell the provider you are pregnant. Some essential oils are best avoided during pregnancy.
- Undergo testing
Sometimes pregnancy can affect the eyes, causing headaches. A trip to the ophthalmologist can help.
- Alternative treatments
Experts believe that therapy color green calm of mind and is particularly effective for stress headaches. You can also try yoga and breathing exercises as Anulom viloma eliminate stress.

Some doctors approve taking acetaminophen (Tylenol), but should not take any pain reliever for headache pain, including herbal products, without first consulting a health professional.

While most headaches during pregnancy are harmless, others can be a sign of a more serious problem. In the second or third trimester, headaches may be a sign of preeclampsia, a serious condition that includes high blood pressure.

If you have a migraine for the first time during pregnancy, or if you have a headache that feels unlike any you’ve experienced before, call your healthcare provider to make sure it is not a sign of more serious problems.

Blood pressure is the pressure in the blood vessels in the body. It is the force with which blood moves through the blood vessels. Doctors and nurses measure blood pressure, putting a band around the arm. They listen to blood flow with a stethoscope. High blood pressure (also called hypertension) occurs when blood moves through the blood vessels at a pressure higher than normal.

Chronic hypertension is high blood pressure diagnosed before pregnancy or before 20 weeks of pregnancy. This type of hypertension does not go away after delivery. Medical experts do not fully understand the causes of hypertension. Genes, diet and lifestyle can play a role.

Causes:
There are three types of hypertension in pregnant women:

- Chronic Hypertension: High blood pressure that develops before 20 weeks of pregnancy or occurring before the woman becomes pregnant. Sometimes a woman has high blood pressure for a long time before getting pregnant, but she does not know it until their first prenatal checkup.
- Gestational hypertension: Some women just get high blood pressure near the end of pregnancy. They have no other associated symptoms.
- Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH): It is also called toxemia or preeclampsia. This condition can cause serious problems for both mother and baby if left untreated. PIH develops after 20 weeks of pregnancy. In addition to high blood pressure, it causes the protein in the urine, blood changes and other problems.

Treatment:
Treatment depends on the type of high blood pressure:
- Chronic hypertension: If you are already taking medication for high blood pressure, the doctor may ask you to continue taking this medicine. If this drug is not safe for the baby, the doctor may want you to change medication or stop taking medication during pregnancy. The doctor will pay particular attention to how the baby is growing. You can have ultrasound exams more often. There may be other tests near the end of the pregnancy to make sure the baby is healthy. The doctor will monitor you closely for signs of preeclampsia.
- Gestational hypertension: This condition does not need any treatment. But it can be difficult to distinguish this condition from early or mild preeclampsia, so the doctor will watch closely to make sure the blood pressure does not become PIH.
- PIH: How the doctor treats this condition depends on how close the deadline and how you and the baby are doing. The only treatment for PIH is that the baby is born. If the baby is born very early, it can have serious health problems. However, the doctor may want the baby to be born prematurely if you or the baby is very sick. If the doctor thinks it is safe to continue the pregnancy to term, he or she will follow you and the baby very closely until delivery. You should see the doctor often and get blood tests. The baby will be tested to ensure that he or she is healthy. You may have to stay home from work and rest in bed.

When blood pressure rises slightly and she is not near the end of her pregnancy, bed rest may help reduce the pressure. Bed rest at home or in hospital may be prescribed. If blood pressure does not increase to dangerous levels, pregnancy can be allowed to continue until labor begins naturally.

Cure:
High blood pressure during pregnancy can place the woman and baby at risk for severe problems. The women needs special care and may have to see the doctor more often. Working with the doctor to control the blood pressure level will help improve the chances of having a healthy baby.

Many women have heartburn for the first time during pregnancy, particularly during the second and third trimesters. This is usually not uncomfortable or painful. gastro esophageal reflux is often called “acid reflux” or “heartburn.” But this condition has nothing to do with the heart!

Indigestion is common during pregnancy and may occur with the heartburn. Also known as “dyspepsia,” indigestion is another name for an upset stomach. You know you have indigestion if you feel full, bloated or gassy.

Causes:
Heartburn occurs when food is digested in the stomach, which contains acid, is pushed into the esophagus (the tube between the mouth and stomach). This causes a burning sensation behind the breastbone or a burning sensation that starts in the stomach and seems to rise. You can also have a bitter taste in the mouth or a feeling that vomit is rising in the throat.
- Usually, the food moves through the esophagus between the mouth and stomach.
- When you are not eating, a circular valve around the lower esophagus closes the connection between the esophagus and stomach.
- This valve keeps stomach acid to rise.
- When you swallow, the valve relaxes to allow food and liquid to flow through.
- If the valve relaxes when not eating, stomach acids can flow back into the esophagus, causing irritation and burning sensation.

During pregnancy, the stomach acids leak easily into esophagus as hormones relax the muscles in your digestive tract, including the valve in the esophagus. During the second and third trimester, heartburn can be worse as the growing uterus presses the stomach.

Pregnancy hormones also slower:
- The muscles that propel food from the esophagus to the stomach
- The muscles contract to digest food in the stomach, which slows digestion
